Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?#HammerDown
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?I read this earlier and Bowlsby needs to be very careful here. If the Power Four really think they can break away from the NCAA without serious legal ramifications they should really think again. There are going to be schools and programs with some clout that stand to be left out. I'm sorry I just don't see that happening.
The further fracturing of the NCAA would result in the complete dessimation of many athletic departments (SMU included). We'd be better off bulldozing Ford and trying to be the University of Chicago of the Southwest. Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?Of course we could...we were left out of the Big 12, The Mountain West, and effectively the Big East. But, there are three things that may give us hope.
First, the limitation to schools in the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and PAC (as previously written) leaves out too many schools, including many state universities and Notre Dame with too much influence to let it happen without some pushback. Second, the Big 12 and PAC will not be allowed to stand pat in terms of the number of schools, all conferences will have to go to 16. While the Big 12 could go after some ACC schools, the PAC would find it difficult to fill with BYU, and other members of the MWC. Either conference could provide an opportunity for SMU. Finally, that big 900 pound gorilla sitting in the living room that started all of this, ESPN, is going to find it's hold on college football threatened by potentially four pay for view or independent conference channels like the SEC channel, etc. and the new Fox Sports competitor and out of fear finally try to bolster the futures of those threatened to be left out--including the AAC and ACC.
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?ACC is in no danger if being left out. Where did u get that from?
It's us the AAC and MWC that would be left out and paired up with cusa sbc and mac. At that point, just fold up shop IMHO.
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?Last person on the pile would be the ACC, they would be the first out when the Big 12 calls. Division Four implies without saying it--four major conferences.
You seem to quick to announce defeat--that is not the attitude TCU had when left out of the conference and then going 1-9. Maybe that's the problem with SMU, we think this is going to be easy! No it is going to be a fight every step of the way. It just took 26 years for SMU to lose that attitude of entitlement.
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football? And the players are adding their "two cents". Joe Schad tweeted:
"TCU RB Waymon James said if players got $ from NCAA/video games, fewer players would turn pro early. "Why not? We make $ for our school." Playing players will skill collegiate sports for non-revenue athletes (men and women) as well as non-Power Conferences Pony Up
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?
If only we could shed the sense of entitlement... Mustangs Abu!
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?Yes.............somewhere, the ghost of Ken Pye is smiling. Peruna is my mascot!
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?Entitlement is the perfect word. YES, we absolutely could be left out -- would be left out, unless we continue the upward climb.
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?
That means 10,11,12 win seasons.........not the 5-7, 6-6 records that many are predicting with few wins against "BCS" teams like A&M, Tech, & TCU. Peruna is my mascot!
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football? We can't control the process, but we can prepare our administration, donors and coaches to set higher standards. My point here as I am preaching to the choir, it is possible to be a player again, but nothing will be give to us, we have to get prepared on and off the field.
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?
Let's get some facts straight here Mex-- 1.) Div 4 has absolutely NOTHING to do with how many conferences will make up this "super-division". Divison 4 is the next step from D1 (FBS, FCS), D2, D3... -read the article from ACC media days today. Swofford is the one suggesting this. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/acc/2013/07/22/commissioner-john-swofford-super-division/2574369/ 2.) I am not suggesting that moving up from a lower division would be easy, or that we are entitled to a spot in such a division. Quite the opposite - I believe it will not be possible to move up. That is what is happening here...the P5 schools do not want to associate with G5 (inluding AAC and MWC). If this all comes down to player stipends or full cost of tuition payments, we need to be prepared to pay along with the Alabamas and UT's of the world. If we want to be included, we have to be prepared to expand Ford. We have to be prepared to do all of this while earning about 1/20th of what the B12 teams make.
Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football? This sucks

Re: Could we be left out of Division 4 Football?First, the NCAA Division 1 competition committee is comprised of 122 schools. Unless they power conferences break away from the NCAA, they would need the blessing of this committee for a power 4 change. That means that they need 62 votes. Right now there are 11 teams in the Big XII. 14 in the SEC, 14 in the B1G and 12 in the Pac 12. That means that to get the necessary votes they would need the ACC or would have to absorb the ACC somehow, someway. The optimum number is 16 teams per conference if they stick at 4 conferences. That means that the Big XII would have to take on 5 teams. The Pac 12 four teams. And the B1G 2 and SEC 2 teams each. Or, if the ACC is the survivor and the Big 12 is the carcass, then you have the ACC needing to add 2. What happens?
If the ACC is carcass, then UVA, UNC, go to the Big Ten. The SEC needs to add 2. Where do they go? Do they add FSU/GT over blackballs or go VT and NC State to enlarge their footprint? Now it gets really interesting which 9 teams do the Big XII and PAC 12 add? Eligible teams would include SMU, UH, Tulane, Duke, Wake Forest, Miami, Pitt, Syracuse, UConn, Cincinnati, AFA, Navy, Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii.... If the Big XII was the carcass, then you could see the PAC 12 loading up with UT, OU, TT, and OSU. The Big Ten, SEC, and ACC will be probably trying to woo KU. That leaves Baylor, TCU, KSU teams that are free agents as well. I suspect that KU/KSU is a package deal. But whatever happens, it will be interesting. UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
