WSJ: Criticism of NCAA Grows

Postby Water Pony » Tue Jul 23, 2013 12:22 pm

"Another power broker slammed the NCAA on Monday, decrying the stagnation of college sports' governing body. The crux of the issue, Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby said: Democracy has run amok."

I do not like where is the criticism is heading. Have's and have not's?

"ACC commissioner John Swofford acknowledged to USA Today the possibility of forming a “super-division” made up of the top five conferences—the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific-12 and Southeastern."

I question his understanding of democracy...real democracy.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

This makes me very, VERY uneasy.... I do not like where this is headed. Not only for us, but for all of college football.

This is all so predicable and has been coming in fits and spurts since 1973. Back then smaller schools wanted to share revenue and threatened a "Robin Hood" system. Big guys responded and cut out the small school votes with D1, D2, D3 classifications. 1978 brought compromise D1-A. 1979 brought the CFA as we tried to leave small guys behind.

NCAA responded by ramping up investigations of cheating and big schools stood down. Implosion of SWC, BCS system out of the old CFA, and now conference re-alignment. It's all the same thing. Big schools want to monopolize the increasingly large sums of money and keep small schools out of the system.

Difference today is NCAA has been neutered...media and public don't care...and the threshold for inclusion in the Big Boy Club is much higher.

We were a part of the CFA...not a part of the BCS...and will have to pray and start sprinting if we want to get in to the new club.
