The AP rankings might now be irrelevant since they don't have anything to do with determining a national champion anymore, but they're still great to use when analyzing college football on a historical scale.

The AP college football poll has been through World War II, has changed and adapted with the times, and has often looked to make a statement when needed - like in 2003 by naming USC the national champion, even though LSU took home the BCS title..

I know they beat Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl one year around 1960. I believe it was 6-0.

Army and Navy are the only non-BCS school in the top 47, at least for a year.

Duke 7, Arkansas 6, and it was indeed 1960. Duke also has Sugar and Orange titles over Alabama and Nebraska, respectively, and twice lost in the Rose Bowl game, in 1939 in Pasadena and the second time three weeks after Pearl Harbor in Durham. SI just ran a very cool article on that game, why it happened at Duke Stadium, and where the Duke and Oregon State players and coaches ended up, including some who met again while in the service.
