not sure if this is the same as simply being waived, but it's not the IR:

The team waived the following players with injured designations:

CB Richard Crawford (torn ACL, MCL, LCL)

found this explanation of the designation:

Prior to the first cutdown date, injured players with less than 4 years of service cannot go onto IR until they pass through waivers. Those players are released with the “waived/injured” designation. Known as “injury waivers”, this process exposes the player to waivers, but warns other teams that the player is injured. If the player clears injury waivers, the team can then either place the player on IR or agree to an injury settlement (paying the player for the weeks that he is expected to be recovering from his injury) and then release the player.

Injury waivers only applies during the offseason up until the first cutdown date, thereafter, a player with less than 4 years of service time can be placed directly on IR.

still a bummer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he rejoins the team once he clears waivers and goes on IR or something. Unlikely another team would claim him, the Pats caused quite a stir a few years back when they did that to the Giants with Jake Ballard who was out for the year

I guess, there's a chance that the Redskins might be planning/willing to ultimately place Richard on their IR, so he would get the benefit of rehabbing with the team's training staff. One can only hope.

that would seem to be the 'good' outcome, but they could always seek an injury settlement and part ways.

That is correct if they decide to go that way. Let's home they do at least stash him on IR. Such a shame regardless.

The knee injury sounds really horrific though. All three ligaments.... ouch

That sucks. I know it's "just business" by the team, but if he doesn't get brought back, that's a low-class move. Once in a while, doing the right thing by a player is more important. It's not like dumping him saves big money. He's on a minimum contract, isn't he?

Hope they place him on the IR and he gets another shot at making the 53 next year.

The injury is the bad thing. The waiver situation is just the way the system works. Just hope he recovers fully for next year.

perhaps a small plus in his favor is that it was reported he is RGIII's closest friend on the team. also, it seems like Shanahan has taken care of the players that have given it all for the team, in the past couple or so years. I'm hoping they look after him.
I'm thinking if he ends up on IR, the team pays for surgery and rehab, but if he's cut loose, he'll have to do all of that on his own dime, alone. That's tough.
