We Need To Dedicate A Game To Former Coach Gregg

Postby smumustang1980 » Tue Aug 27, 2013 10:15 am

SMU needs to dedicate a game to Coach Gregg and the guys who played for him. The efforts of this man and his team allow us to enjoy our Mustangs today. I can think of nothing more inspiring than this fine group of former Mustangs. They brought us to the dance; we need to remember this.

Yes, this would be a very nice thing to do.

We honored the 1989 team in 2009.

We retired Gregg's number less than 10 years ago.

Do we need to so this every 2 years or what?
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Hell, I would retire his hubcaps every year because the message is worth repeating.

The truth he built very little of the foundation to establish a strong football program. He fielded teams with zero talent, lot of losses and dutifully took the lumps the jack-asses in the Death Penalty deserved but he refused to publically stand up for the obvious either before or after he left. SMU was headed in the wrong direction and would spend many years in the wilderness by following the tract laid by Kenneth Pye. Almost every football related decision made by SMU during his years were the wrong decisions except to play within NCAA rules. The foundation which resulted from those decisions would have to be just about completely destroyed for SMU to field a competitive football program. A few pointed statements that SMU built a lousy, losing Model along the way could have really taken a decade or so off the rebuilding program. He had to know as a football coach that the Ken Pye Model was a dead end killer for SMU Football

And do you think he had a choice? Pye was SMU's President. Coach Gregg accomplished what was possible under the circumstances. You wouldn't have a team today without his efforts and without the efforts of many people who worked behind the scenes to checkmate Pye.

Gregg was the leader who took SMU away from a proverbial Dunkerque... or worse.

I second that thought and add this: Turn your iconic heroes into assets... Myths - and I don't mean lies - are strong motivators around which to build team morale. It's all about the clan and the fight.

I agree.

We hired Gregg because he was a highly recognizable and respected football figure with head coaching experience. It was as much about PR as football. We were starting over from scratch and just needed to get back on our legs. Forrest Gregg took an impossible job under tough circumstances.

Let us remember that we are all Mustangs... No need to take offense for any comments. Actions and intent are more important. We all love the Ponies...

And a great job of getting us back on our legs he did. Set us up for countless losing seasons and a WAC invite, woohoo.

Gregg has had enough recognition.

We should do something special to honor him at halftime on the Connecticut game :!:

He was the coach closest to a Larry Brown that we've ever had coach football :!: :!:
May the forth be with us.
