I guess we could have schedule something like Elon and drilled them and then feel great about ourselves. Or Duke, beating up on North Caroline Central A and T or something like that.

Honestly, I wish our first game out of the gate every year was against an FCS team. I'd rather work out some kinks vs. our easiest non-conf opponent, give the guys a little confidence, and maybe set ourselves up to possibly play better in our tougher games. How exactly is that a bad thing?

Montana State might not be our easiest game......

Maybe not, but in average years whatever FCS team you schedule is typically your easiest.

no kidding. particularly when we routinely look woefully unprepared in week 1.

We should just put "Honolulu" on our schedule, put the team on a plane, fly in circles around DFW for 14 hours and place fake palm trees around the Stadium.

Our ooc schedule is a death march. This tradition of playing 3 swc schools is a no win proposition at this point. Well i guess you do get that bump when the teams play in Dallas and bring their alums. Georgia Tech was in the SEC one upon a time. The only SEC team that they schedule is UGA.
How does the SMU program benefit by playing Tech, A&M, Baylor and TCU annually?

with our far flung conference, we should be playing Baylor, TCU and I will throw in UNT every year (or at least most years) to help keep things "local". Baylor and TCU games are our measuring stick to see if we are progressing. I agree the Tech games have clearly shown us that we haven't made much progress but even Tech is closer than any of our future conference mates other than Houston and Tulsa

Just put on big boy pants...just because our head coach is a defeatist doesn't mean our AD can't consistently schedules games that'll generate revenue and be interesting to fans. It's that kind of attitude that's the reason we "can't play" TCU, Baylor, Tech or A&M. If we never want to test ourselves against in-state former rivals, what's the point?

because otherwise people will give exactly 0% of a sh*t about anything related to SMU football.

How quickly people seem to forget that we tried to put a fair amount of pressure on to be included in the Big 12ish, so suddenly this "death march" that you claim doesn't benefit us as an OOC would have meant last place in a conference every year. I'm sick of this excuse; time to sack up and recruit and prepare to play at this level. If we can't do that, then why bother with all the talk about "belonging" either for the team or the conference? I agree with the notion of scheduling our FCS team as game number one to iron out the kinks, but otherwise we either are a team prepared to compete at the highest level or we need to shut the [deleted] up.

I'll be cheering for a win, but for MSU not SMU......
Watch out for this cupcake from the FCS. We aren't even playing at the top of our game in the BSC.

Don't fret, going forward we're only going to be playing Baylor and TCU out of that group. Surely playing just those two every year doesn't scare you.
