Another opener - another opportunity wasted

Everyone is pumped. Winnable game. Huge crowd. The countdown was a great marketing idea, and it got folks excited.

And we crap the bed. Again. Embarrassingly. To a WALK ON TRUE FROSH! To a rookie head coach.

If the SMU admin doesn't care about supporting the Fb team with an indoor practice facility, with modern jerseys that get players and fans excited --- why the hell should we care???

I was at the Clemson game Saturday night. What an atmosphere. What fan support. They have buy-in from the board of trustees all the way down to the freaking janitors. Do we have that? Can we somehow get it? If not- what the heck are we doing? We should not move up to Division 4 if we can't all be on the same page.

TCU gets it. Jerseys. Support. Buy-in from top down.

Will SMU ever get out if its own way? I honestly don't know.

After 57 years of following SMU football, I am becoming slowly disheartened by our efforts at football and share this concern.

Bruce Feldman (CBS college football writer) sums it up this way:

•Louisville better hope Tommy Tuberville can keep Cincinnati on track. The Cards, who play Sunday, couldn't afford Cincy losing to a middling Big Ten team like Purdue. The league that Louisville's in, the AAC, is desperate for credibility, and having Connecticut lose to Towson in its opener certainly didn't help. Or Rutgers lose at Fresno State. Or South Florida get blown out by McNeese State. Or SMU lose by 18 to Texas Tech at home. But at least the Bearcats did their part thumping Purdue, 42-7.

Tough beginning for the AAC everyone was so excited about

Just now? 1989 was 24 years ago. Almost half the time you have followed SMU football this has been the case!

W4e were in the game and had a chance to win. TTU had better overall talent and wore our D down. It is an age old story since at least the Fry years.

Its behind us. TIme to move on. Learn form mistakes, eliminate stupid penalties and continue to complete 67% or more of passes and limit turnovers.

Our destiny is ahead of us, not behind us.
