Outside receivers (Thompson, Holman, Nelson)

12 passes caught for 77 yards-less than 6.5 yards per catch against Division 1AA school. You're looking for 15 ypc at those positions

and just to add - those guys have to be enough of a threat to draw some safety cover at some point so we can get more yds on the short dunks. that is not happening.

With Jones' history of treating OC games as preseason, I do not believe he has opened up much of the play book. He ran a few successful zone reads last night early then stopped. He threw a few vertical passes but not until we got desperate. I would think we will continue with a base offensive scheme until conference then open it up. At that time I would anticipate more action and yards from the outside.

Another stat: no defensive turnovers in two games.

Holman overthrown on a deep ball and it is hard to let the deep plays on the outside develop when you have 2 seconds to release the ball :).

The drag routes were gone in the 4th qtr, but most of those are 3-5 yds

How about 11 penalties for 85 yards?

How about 15:08 time of possession for the 2nd-4th quarters?

Maybe the worst, 2 TDs on 5 red zone trips, while they scored 4 TDs on 4 trips. They finished drives and we didn't.

Red Zone Season totals:
Code: Select all
____|_TD_|_FG_|_None_|_PCT
SMU | 3  | 3  |  4   | 45%
Opp | 7  | 2  |  0   | 88%

Wow. That is a glaring problem.

That's a defensive problem as much as an offensive problem. Penalties have also been a significant factor and costs us at least one TD in the Tech game. We also had 6 out of 7 field goals - however, some were probably kicked from beyond the red zone.

Agreed.
