AD Hart Should Give Away Tickets To Fill The Stands

Tickets for many home games now go for peanuts on Stubhub, etc. Why not just give the damn stuff away as with Mustang Mania and fill the stands. SMU needs to spend money and buy market share to build a casual fan base back in Dallas. Where are bright Cox School students when you need them?

What the hell is wrong with Hart? Can't he figure this out?

The cost of tickets is not what is keeping people away.

You have to market and sell. The team is fun to watch, most of the time.

You have to sell tickets at a certain value and you cant give them away. In addition, any HS prospects have to sign a waiver. Having the bands there was a great idea - i would do that every game or invite 5k kids to do something at half time, whatever it takes.

TIMES HAVE CHANGED PEOPLE

The majority of Dallasites are going to want to watch the longhorns on TV or some kind of major SEC or Big 10 game. Television is killing us. When I was a young man there was 1 ESPN game a week and it was replayed several times until the next week's game. Now you have a game on almost every night, and several on the weekend. We have people setting up on the Blvd with big screens and they sit out there and watch the TV games rather than going inside of the stadium. What is it going to take to get a person or a family to come and watch an SMU game? Not sure what the answer is but you could drop a million free tickets from the sky over Dallas and the crowd will be the same until we have a product that will draw them away from the TV for an interesting and meaningful game.

We had a bus brigade a few years ago where we gave away tickets to local churches or schools to bring in several bus loads of new spectators. I was dumb enough to participate monetarily. Most of the buses sat empty because no one wanted to come.

I do not have the answer. SMU has not drawn their own fans in my life time. Sure there were some big give aways in the past. Where are those fans now? But you have to give them a reason to come because there are plenty of people doing plenty of things in Dallas on Saturdays that cost a lot more than a ticket to an SMU game.

if you give the tickets away then you have a chance to jam them with overpriced concessions and SMU comes out ahead.

I have no problem with giving some away. But the problem is getting them in the stadium after you have done so. You could pile them up in the streets and people will not come unless they have a "want" to be there. Apparently we have to "build it" then they will come.

I have donated to this more than once, it's sad, because even with free tickets and transportation, people didn't want to see the product.

True. I bought like 15 seats last year to get people in the stands and I couldn't give the things away.
