5.1 Yards Per Passing Attempt

Postby Stallion » Sun Sep 22, 2013 12:47 pm

I know a lot of you think that Gilbert is playing like the next Johnny Unitas because he can complete a bunch screen passes but unless he successfully throws the ball downfield then this offense is going to have a long year. This is the Mike Romo effect. If you only throw balls within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage you have effectively shortened the field to 20 yards instead of 100 yards. 11 Defenders within 20 yards of the line of scrimmage will smother any passing game. The only time in the game when Gilbert looked like a quality Division 1A QB was in the second half drives when he started throwing it downfield with success against Aggie backups. When NCAA Stats come out he will be about 105th in passing efficiency.

8.98 in yards per completion which places him at 110 out of 114 QBs in Division 1A through the A&M game

Agreed. But he shows he can throw those. I think you are right- he doesn't want to throw an int and so is extra conservative. He only seems to open it up in the second half cause we are behind.

Too bad we don't have a receiver that can break a tackle or run away from the defenders on some of those short passes. I cannot remember a receiver making the first guy miss a tackle. It just doesn't happen with the guys we are playing now.

Plus you gotta factor all those darn two yard screens which don't seem to set up any other plays or open the field as designed.

Hard to watch on TV, was he even looking downfield at all? Anyone open? I guess Thompson is benched or in the dog house - was supposed to be our speedster guy. Jeremy Johnson hardy saw any throws.(4 catches for 16 yds) GG loves Holeman all of the sudden. 31 was the longest completion. Hopefully Taylor can figure some things out. Gaines catch/fumble was awful.

I'm not saying its all Gilbert's fault but what does it say when you give out about 30 Receiver scholarships over 5 years and can't throw anything but 5 yard passes against a questionable Aggie defense? You got to at least show a deeper threat or none of those short passes are going to work

And when you try to convert HS QBs to WR instead of just recruiting good HS WR. How many former QBs are currently play WR for us?

In this offense the short pass is the equivalent of an off tackle dive (dink and dunk). Gilbert, I think, is hemmed in by the system and the game plan (such as it is), and the limitations of his teammates. Yeah, Gilbert is not the problem here.

Thompson was on the list of beaten up or injured players, after only two games of tackle football.

40 wide receivers on roster and, mysteriously, none of them can catch. The Yards Per Passing Attempt is obviously an issue.
