Shoring Up the D-Line

Postby JoeKidd » Tue Sep 24, 2013 2:26 am

It is pretty obvious we need some help shoring up the D-Line. Saw this articles on ESPN and thought it may be worth going after this kid, especially since non of the Big XII schools can.

Would he only have 1 year of eligibility left?

How could someone so highly rated out of JUCO not crack the starting lineup at KU? Aren't they pretty putrid? That seems like a red flag to me. I think we'd beat KU.

Definitely a red flag, but at this point we need all the live big bodies we can get.

from my experience it usually does take at least 3-4 games for even a great JUCO to adjust to Division 1A Football. They need to come on by second half of season. That's one reason I was cautioning about expecting too much from Shead early even though he's a great prospect

I agree we need all the help we can get along the DLine. So he would only be eligible for 2015? That would be the year after Darrian Wright graduates, so that could work

I don't understand all of the bashing of this year's defensive line. Are they really that much worse than last years d line? We got smoked by A&M last year with Margus, Pitt, Grenier, and Spike. Same with Baylor. I think our d line will show up better against our AAC schedule. No one has really just lined up and run the ball down our throats. We probably have more D line sacks this year than we had at this time last year. I think we are actually 3 deep all the way across the d line. We probably need to rotate them more to reduce fatigue. The biggest problem for our defense is.....our offense. We don't control the ball, so our d never gets any rest.

I disagree. We will have the ball run down our throats this weekend don't worry. And next weekend as well against Rutgers. aTm ran the ball about 5-6 straight plays sometime in the 2nd quarter I believe as if they were just practicing. Gashed us for at least 8 yards a pop each time, same play. As for 3 deep, who's our 3rd string NT? Reed is our 2nd string NT? He's terrible. Our offensive time of possession has actually been pretty good relative to the competition (per ESPN box score):

29:04 SMU vs 30:56 aTm (they scored quick though)
33:29 Montana St vs 26:31 SMU (they had 160 yards rushing!)
28:37 TT vs 31:23 SMU

Our D all the way around is just terrible, plain and simple which is a little surprising to me (Mason's checked out to, I believe . . . I don't think he wants to be here -- he wants to be a HC somewhere). Anyway, I hope our run D improves with Rambo, but TCU will run it down our throats and that's how they will win. Pretty simple formula.

One of our 3-4 starting DEs is 241lbs. Our backup nose tackle is a 262lb walk-on.

Whatever happened to Nick Reed? Is he just not good? The consensus here has been that he isn't

If you're talking about Barnes he weighs 260. Weight in program is wrong.

The biggest problem for our defense is our offense. I saw Kevin "Sumlin interviewed at halftime of the Alabama game, and he kept stressing the importance of winning 3rd down. How often do we win 3rd down? Alabama's defense couldn't win if their offense was an all pass, 3 and out machine.

That is still a little light for a 3-4 DE. I really like his motor though.
