I wrote this in another thread, but thought it deserved its own. I know there are Klemm-haters on this board that say he never actually got us any players, but please read the following with an open mind.
The lack of recruiting under JJ has been the dagger that has kept us from 10 win seasons IMHO. Truly inexcusable.
Now just imagine ---- if Mora doesn't get the UCLA job, and Klemm was able to stay at SMU for just 1 or 2 more years, we would have had quite a lot of Pac-12 level talent on our team. He was named freaking "coach/recruiter of the year", and had the following guys signed or ready to sign with SMU:
2012
Gabe Marks (4 star, 13th ranked WR - bolted to WSU when Klemm left)
Robert Lewis (actually committed to SMU, then bolted to WSU when Klemm left)
All these guys were on SMU hard because of Klemm and ended up at UCLA with Klemm:
Jordan Payton (4 star)
Lacy Westbrook (4 star)
Ishmail Adams (4 star)
Eldridge Massington (4 star)
Caleb Benenoch (4 star)
I have no idea whether they would have actually signed with us, qualified, etc.(Davon Moreland never made it after all)...but I have absolutely no doubt that Klemm would have sold us to more than a few 4 star guys. He'd have stolen them from USC, UCLA, WSU, UW, Cal, etc.
If that happens, our talent level increases and we at least feel better about JJ. Perhaps JJ gets extended. Perhaps we steal that Texas Tech game this year, and compete with TAMU. At the very least, we'd feel like we have momentum going forward.
If's and buts...I know, but still. Just imagine...
