It's not 21st century, but the all time, all-world 'scratch your head' hire was Gerry Faust at Notre Dame. You have arguably the biggest name in all of college football and you hand it over to a High School coach. Notre Dame paid for that one.

Crazy notion but what about bringing Dooley back here as an asst. if Jerry cleans house after this season?

He was a TERRIBLE head coach at Tennessee, but he still recruited well. I wouldn't want him calling plays or anything, but he can recruit and is familiar with SMU

What good is recruiting well if you don't win?

My point is, his strength was recruiting, not coaching. He had some highly rated classes at UT.

The June Jones hiring at SMU is not even close to being on the radar of this list. Nobody in 25 years could elevate SMU from an awful football team to an average team that competes for average bowl games each year. I thank him for that indefinitely. The hardest thing is getting to the 9-10 win range consistently, and that is what we need to be looking for next.

Makes sense but he could get a job in a P5 conference if he really wanted one.

Right, but he's got young kids, ties to Dallas, and a ton of buyout cash from Tennessee.

Todd Dodge is going to turn UNT into a powerhouse. Just wait.

Still though it's hard seeing him take a big step back career-wise to coach here.

Was Dooley a good recruiter during his tenure here? That's surprising because that was one of their major issues with him at Tennessee.

The coaches said that he seemed to be trying to show how smart he was (UVA/UGA Law School). That didn't play very well in hillbilly country.
