The One That Got Away-Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech-another gimmick offensive coach-known for poor recruiting is struggling in a very similiar way as June Jones once he was required to put his recruited players on the field. If you take of the ridiculous victories over Division 1AA schools (Elon and Presbyterian????? WTF). While June has exactly a .500 record against Division 1A schools since 2009 (eliminated transition 1-10 season in 2008), Paul Johnson has an even worse record against Division 1A schools over the last 4 years at 20-22. Georgia Tech is a program that had gone to about 6 straight bowls even before Johnson showed up. As some great recruits have left for NFL, Johnson has been unable to replace them. Again, a program built without strong recruiting is a house of cards-IT JUST DOESN'T SHOW UP FOR 3-4 years despite the fact that both are regarded as Coaching geniuses

Tech AD was on the radio here yesterday. They have a lot of similarities with the SMU program. They have a new AD and an "innovative" coach who is now on shaky ground. The host was pressing him on the financials surrounding the possible firing of Johnson. Of course the AD was non responsive on tha question. They are still paying Paul Hewitt from ball and they may be still on the hook for Chan Gailey.

Is there a reason Lane Kiffin is not coming up in any of these coaching discussions? I think he'd be a great hire for us. He moved into such a terrible situation at USC and couldn't make it work, but otherwise he has a good record in college football, and thus he was hired to a top 5(?) coaching position in the country. But Carroll really left that program as a crashing ship. Kiffin's accustomed to high caliber recruiting and coaching at higher levels. Now he has something to prove. The last time his salary was reported (2011), it was at $2.6M...

Kiffin would be such a ballsy move and one that I would absolutely love. He's still got street cred, could put together a monster staff of recruiters, and will be coaching with a tremendous chip on his shoulder based on how things went at USC.
That said, I think there is a better chance of Barry Switzer coming to SMU than Lane Kiffin. Kiffin left Hart's daddy high and dry at Tennessee. I highly doubt Rick is going to make that hire.

Kiffin will land another P5 job, that's why his name hasn't come up.

Not 100 percent clear right now, a lot will be affected by what happens on the NFL's Black Monday and what happens with the USC vacancy.

He is a snake oil saleman. He failed in Oakland. He was failing in Tennessee when he convinced USC to hire him. He failed at USC.
Good recruiting is important, but so is winning. He is the new Rick Neuheisel - great at getting jobs - horrible at keeping them.

What he said! This guy is a fraud of a coach. It's finally catching up with him. Would not want.
