No biggie it's not like he holds the record for fumbles.

I never played football on any organized team at any level but thought there were specific drills to train RBs not to fumble. Seems like I've read about them on ponyfans.com in times past. Are they done in our practices? Or is not doing so part of the no contact credo I've read about?

I have not been impressed with him this year at all. He seems to dance a bit too much and at times seems to be running in place.

Also, that fumble/strip returned for a touchdown was simply the Memphis linebacker saying he wants to take the ball away more than Shead wants to hold onto it.

Bet he never drops his phone or IPad . Or would let anyone take these away from him.

Shead's loose handling of the ball is a basic flaw. Backs instinctively know not to do what he has done. He also does not run with authority (power) and hesitates too much and too long in looking for the open field. Hopefully, he'll improve.

If only he had those instincts in high school imagine what he could have done!

As Shead said in the interview, he is well aware of what he did wrong. His mind was elsewhere. He needs to address it and fix it.

Adrian Peterson had a really bad fumbling problem a couple years ago and used a heavier football during drills to help fix that. Could we do something like this?

absolutely; high and tight in traffic. Our guys know what they are supposed to do and not supposed to do, but in the fog of battle...

Tiki Barber formerly of the NY Giants had a history of fumbles before Coach Tom Caughlin arrived and showed him how to hold and carry the ball. He seldom fumbled thereafter. Essentially, the ball is held in the middle of the chest/stomach tucked in right below the lower edge of the shoulder pads. The ball is somewhat vertical with the hand over the top tip of the ball and the elbow and forearm shielding and pushing the ball into the stomach/chest. This takes away stripping the ball from the side of the body where you do not have the same leverage and strength on the ball and/or corrects the swinging of the ball in the arm and away from the body as the back runs protecting the ball from various hits and stripping chops.
