Have y'all stopped and think for a second that maybe JJ is trolling SMU so he can get a chance to play the Aloha bowl every year?!?!?!!?! Has anyone thought that maybe he doesn't care about us being in a BCS bowl and that he prefers going into the Hawaii bowl instead for christmas? What's better than getting paid 2 Million and free vacations to Hawaii?!

Not excusing anything or anybody, but, to add some other facts to the “Hawaii is our Goal” claim. I don’t recall exactly what JJ may have or may have not have said to the Media in regards to Hawaii, and to give the impression that all we want is Hawaii (or in other words, just 6 wins). I do recall him saying Hawaii is our goal at one point. But the message to the players in August and the start of the season was:

1) BCS Bowl and Conference Championship

2) When BCS was out … conference championship … and the notion of we are going to Hawaii this year. Suggesting he was going to pull a S-Miss and opted out of the Liberty in favor of Hawaii. But, not that we don’t want to be conference Champs, that was never the message. This goal (conference champs) was discussed in meetings always … conference Champs and Hawaii in the same discussion. Now you/we can debate the merits of opting out of the appointed conference Champions bowl … and that is legit. Agree or not, outside of BCS, JJ see’s bowls as a reward to the players for all their blood, sweat and tears. Sucks for the fans, but it’s hard to beat Hawaii. JJ also knows SMU will be the fan favorite in Hawaii. Is playing in Hawaii better for recruiting then playing an SEC opponent (assuming we get one) in the Liberty Bowl … possibly. Or does losing to an SEC opponent hurt you more than knocking the snot out of heavily favored Fresno State helps … don’t know, but all good arguments to be made.

3) When the conference Championship was gone … then yes, the message was let’s get bowl eligible and go to Hawaii.

This is not MO, but many comments from the players. Before I even posted this, I called and asked 3 players to confirm this again. Now, does this change anything … certainly not opinions, I just wanted to add some additional facts from the players perspective that I talked to.

Personally, I don’t see how any coach would strive for .500 and 6 wins; there is ZERO upside for the coach, including JJ. All coaches have egos, JJ is no different, and 6-6 will not fill anyone’s ego needs. Maybe years 1-2 after 1-11, but not years 3-4-5, esp after already getting 7 wins, 8 if you count the bowl. JJ certainly has the cash to fly his [deleted] to Hawaii after the season.

Even if it is free, there are a lot nicer places to stay and better islands to visit than the Hawaii Bowl trip.

We may be talking semantics here but I heard him say "Our goal is to go to Hawaii". He said nothing of swapping out. The swap out talk was heavy a couple of years earlier when we actually did play for the conference championship, but not in the instance in which I heard him say he wanted to go to Hawaii.

Maybe he needs to realize that if he is going to make such public statements that the fans hear without further explanation it is going to ruffle feathers with the fan base.
