SMU D gave up 593 yards against Temple

The Army D only gave up 361 to them the previous week with the same freshman QB. I know we want to live in fantasy land about the win yesterday but the 24 hour rule needs to be in effect now as we have Cincinnati coming up next. No, Cincinnati is not elite but they are better than Temple. I hope the D will don better next time.

I will take our final result over Army's final result. I realize the defense sucked but there has to be a time even you that like to criticize every single thing that a win is the ultimate stat.

I did not say anything about the result of the Army game but we can't turn a blind eye to what happened on defense against Temple. That is unless Temple was our Super Bowl.

Yes we can turn a blind eye. Next game is a different opponent, different location, different game plan, etc. Temple is done. It was a win. Again, I will grant you we have performed poorly on defense, but not one play from that game will carry over to Cincy. That is Mason' job now, not worrying about Temple stats vs Army stats.

BTW I think Temple had a 26-0 lead on Army in first half and then played like SMU against Memphis

Just making a point. We need to improve. And it should be a concern for the future. When was the last time SMU gave up 593 yard? I don't think we have done that in a while but I could be wrong. I really hope poor defensive play does not carry over to Cincinnati.

We gave up at least 593 twice last year (Baylor-613, A&M-605). We also gave up 591 to Tulsa.

Thanks for the info.

Those are shockingly bad numbers.

When Joyner, Pope and Greenbauer were all on the field together we were much better than when we have missed any one of them. That just speaks to a huge depth issue. And it appears that Greenbauer was the most needed and he is the one that will not be there the rest of the year. So we need to work on correcting that right now.

One thing that has been really shocking - Seals has not translated to the gameday yet. When Yenga was put in that OLB position, there was an immediate upgrade in the performance of the defense. Seals struggled with the edge on Saturday, as Yenga was moved inside for Pope.
Randolf hasn't played as well as he looked in practice. He still loses his feel of positioning on the field on game day. Might be time to look at AJ Justice there.

I do think that Pope's return to the inside with Rambo and Yenga moving back outside will instantly upgrade our front 7 play.
I'm not sure what the answer to the secondary is, but why not throw AJ Justice in there? Shak has all the physical tools but they are no good if the tools are 15 yards from the chap with the ball when he catches it.

Like I said in another post, this year's defense is about the same as last year's defense.
