A Sign of June Goeth?

Postby aus10fromhous10 » Mon Nov 04, 2013 11:08 am

I received the email invite to the annual Athletic Department/Mustang Club reception in New York City last week. The reception is typically held the same week as the National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner.

Traditionally, it features both the athletic director and head football coach. But in this year's invite, Rick Hart is the only featured guest listed on both the email invite and online registration form:

A lot of big names come to this event, and for what amounts to essentially a pep rally for the athletic department, it's a pretty swanky affair. JJ was in attendance in 2012 and to his credit, answered a lot of tough questions.

The 2011 edition was interesting because it was held the same day that both the Big East expansion announcement was made AND news leaked out that JJ was flirting with ASU. June was scheduled to attend, but didn't show up. But it was there that Gerald J. Ford and Steve Orsini both publicly said that JJ was and would still be the coach. (It was also the day I picked up a bunch of PonyFan Twitter followers for my real-time tweets at the event, so thanks for that, guys!)

Obviously, if things turn around this season and June ends up staying, it's easier to add him to the event schedule than to take him off (give the athletic dept. credit for learning from the uprising in 2011 when June didn't show). But for all the rumors and he-said/she-said about JJ's future, this is probably the strongest public sign that something's afoot.

Or, it could be because of the new conference and the new bowl tie ins and the need to start preparing for a bowl game after the final game of the season on Dec 7.

Unlike past years, we will be playing late in the season and perhaps have less time to prepare for a bowl than previous years.

I have no idea. I just know our schedule this year is a bit unusaul compared to previous years.
