I'm a bit confused by this article. If I'm reading this correctly, Penn state's penalties are worse than SMU's. Yet.. 1. When death penalties are brought up, it's about SMU. 2. Our football program is still mediocre, but Penn State is likely to weather it pretty well.
Makes me think that the issue of "mediocre football" has resided (I don't know about right now), not in the coaches, but in the top brass, starting with the President.

I think what made it bad for SMU was being excluded from a top conference...when Big 12 got formed we were left behind. Penn State is still in Big Ten, USC is still in Pac 12 and Miami is still in ACC...even if they gave em worse penalties. I think being in the WAC-ConferenceUSA abyss is what killed our program.

We made the devastation worse by hiring the wrong President (Pye) to preside over the next several years. Truly the worse decision made by the Board ever.

Like most things in life, when something bad happens, there is an immediate desire from the folks in charge to overreact and go completely in the opposite direction. Much like Dodd-Frank was an overly broad overreaction to the 2008 crisis, and so on and so on.

Dodd-Frank IS not was. Be prepared for the latest death to the home buyer initiative coming out January 14.

Gee, he left out that almost minor penalty SMU got that Ped State didn't get. That little part about not being able to play football for a season and not being able to play a home game the next season. There article talks about fines but doesn’t bring up the loss of revenue SMU suffered for two years. It talks about probation but doesn’t mention that 2 year ban on playing is a tad more serious than probation status
And keep in mind, SMU didn’t do anything illegal. Against NCAA rules but not illegal.
Ped State allowed a felon to conduct his felonious acts using Ped State facilities.

Thank you. You beat me to it, but also add in the implicit repercussion where most of SMU's high caliber athletes transferred schools, leaving the program in shambles. We would've, then and now, loved what Penn St. got compared to what SMU got (more so if we can adjust the $60M down for inflation).

That is what people must be reminded of...we didn't do anything illegal or immoral...we broke NCAA rules, yes but nothing done was illegal/immoral

Don't forget we self imposed the second year on ourselves. That is the second worst decision after the decision to hire Pye.

Yup, you got it. Unless a new coach is LB caliber, they probably won't do a whole lot better in recruiting than JJ. You can waste a lot of money, and time going after the 5 stars, and get close just to lose out to the UTs of the world.
May the forth be with us.

Basketball is not football. Let me repeat, basketball is NOT football.
By that, in Basketball, the right player in the right position can completely turn a team around. A great guard or foward or center can change a team from nothing to NCAA Tourney in one season. Football isn't the same.
A great RB can make a mediocre O line look great. A mediocre back can make a great O line look mediocre. In basketball a great player can hide a heck of a lot of problems. Its a numbers game, BB needs five palyers, football need 24 players with totally different skill sets. And that doesn't even begin to explain the defense in football. A coach like LB is suited for Basketball. A LB in football is almost non existent. If players had to go both ways then a LB like coach might be successful in college football. But the level of playing skills is so much more expansive compared to basketball that comparisons between football and basketball coaches are impossible.
LB has a skill set that is proven in basketball. LB's skill set might not, no will not, be translated to a successful FB coach.
This isn't a knock on LB or a defense of JJ. Just a frustration that folks think two entirely different sports are comparable.

I think what he means is that we should get a high caliber NFL or P5 level coach to come here
