Bruce almighty: Springsteen theology class offered

Tuesday 12 Nov 2013

Eat your heart out Bono - The Church of the Boss is the no-nonsense title of a theology class devoted to Bruce Springsteen that will be taught at Rutger's University in New Jersey.

The class will be a semester-long, covering Springsteen’s entire back catalogue, and will be lead by Professor Azzan Yadin-Israel, a Jewish studies and classics specialist.

"Interestingly, Springsteen refers more often to the stories of the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament) than the New Testament," says the Professor.

"On a literary level, Springsteen often recasts biblical figures and stories into the American landscape.

"Theologically, I would say the most dominant motifs are redemption - crossing the desert and entering the Promised Land - and the sanctity of the everyday."

Highly-regarded US college Princeton also teaches a class on "Bruce Springsteen Americana".

The Boss joins a long list of pop and rock stars who have inspired college courses including Tupac, Jay-z, Madonna, Radiohead, and U2 whose work is studied at Washington & Jefferson College's course, How Long Must We Sing This Song?: Rock ‘n’ Roll, Culture, And U2.

So what you are saying is by blaring Springstein and Bon Jovi during the game,we were actually empowering Rutgers rather than making them homesick? I'm glad we didn't play Will Smith or the Hooters during Temple...

Suprised none of these institutions offer a course on Uncle Ted

I've got a high school senior who will be a freshman in college next year. I'm vetoing paying for Springsteen theology classes, not that they would have such a class at Baylor anyway. I was surprised Dad paid for my "Evolution of Jazz" class at SMU, now that I think about it.

Last year doesn't matter anymore. But of course, this IS the school who can't accomplish anything in football without cheating so I suppose a rare win over UH would be something to brag about.

Different kid under center this year. SMU is going to get blown out like they usually do.

Two things,

1. I agree that last year doesn't matter anymore. (I've agreed with you twice in one week, this is weird).

2. To imply that you also haven't cheated in the past and or present to achieve your football success is laughable. You just weren't as good at it. Remember, dear UH also voted against the "repeat violators rule" back in the 80's along with UT and SMU. You think you weren't cheating too?
