When the Mustangs take the field Saturday against the Connecticut Huskies, they'll have a different look: the Ponies will be sporting red helmets with white Mustang logos on the side. In addition, head coach June Jones said Thursday that the players will vote today on whether to wear their normal red uniforms or whether to bring back the blue jerseys worn earlier this season against Rutgers. Jones said he thinks the team is leaning toward wearing the red jerseys, but the team has yet to vote. Quarterback Garrett Gilbert said he likes the look of the red helmets, even though the Mustang logos have not yet been applied. Several other players said they didn't care, that they like both helmets.

Come out this Saturday to see the Calgary Stampeders take on the UConn Huskies!

ANy alternate looks here or there - I am in favor of. I'd prefer chrome helmets, but hey - it's a start!

No red helmets. The white ones are classic. Don't mess with the helmets. Blue jerseys, though, yes!

Agreed! I almost feel like the players have been brainwashed with the red uniforms. How is blue not clearly the preferred choice? It relates to our glory days, and very, very few schools have blue uniforms. Stand out, or at least alternate. I'm good with alternating between blue and red. I mean, since when did our school colors become red and white? Oh wait.

I'm not a fan but go for the Hayden Fry look (Blue) rather than the CFL Look(Red). It would look somewhat like Florida except red rather than orange helmet
I'll be waiting for the University of Texas to make a similiar change to its iconic helmet. Maybe Burnt Orange helmet with while Longhorn. Nah No.

SMU Coaches and administrators can't seem get out of their own way when it comes to uniforms. Decades of making things worse and worse when the answer is right in front of them

Full red would look okay. What about full blue uniform?

They would look like crap. But go ahead and ask your mom whether you could wear your red jersey and red football pants to the game on Saturday and get your picture with Peruna

Red helmets? Not sure anyone (EVER!) has suggested red helmets. My guess is that AD office has heard our alternate uniform/helmet requests, but found that the cheapest option is a plain red helmet (as opposed to chrome) with our blue jerseys from the RU game - rather than commissioning Nike to actually design something cool.

I get it - it's all about $. But not sure I've ever seen any poster on here or on other sites suggest a red helmet - unless it was the plain red from the way, way way old days.

This is possibly the best away uniform I have ever seen. It would be cool if we could get the gloves that show the Mustang when you put the hands together!
Wish we actually had the Big East logo...and the Berth in the big boy bowls...

SMU wore Red Helmets in the 1960s under Hayden Fry. Jerry LeVias, Chuck Hixson, Mike Richardson, etc. Several of posters have suggested red helmets but they gotta go with the Blue not Red Uniforms. See SMU helmet history
