Great now lets get rid of June and go after Coach O. Talk about a guy who can recruit and would bring a lot of passion.

James Franklin would have been a much better hire in my opinion...Sark didn't do anything special at UW

Probably a blessing in disguise for Washington. Sark can recruit but still had Washington wallowing in mediocrity after 5 seasons.

If Orgeron really has learned from his time at Ole Miss, I'd say go gauge his interest. That said, I'd really want some clauses in his contract that would give SMU an easy out if he starts reverting back to his raving lunatic side.

He's definitely a cutting edge recruiter but he would have to have a very good offensive coaching staff.

In terms of growing the program, perhaps the biggest knock on Ed Orgeron is that he isn't a guy that's going to do a lot of interacting with fans and alumni. He'll do the alumni meetings and that sort of thing but he wasn't very proactive about getting out and building support among alumni and fans around Oxford when he was at Ole Miss. In fact, one of the biggest things he had going against him around Oxford was that most of the impressions he made in the community weren't good ones (his neighbors hated him and his wife).

All that said, it's been 6 years since he was at Ole Miss... a lot of things can change about a person in that time.

They could have done better. I'd be surprised if coach O sticks around like they want him to.

I don't see him sticking around. He turned their season around and has been a very popular assistant there for years. I see him taking this as a major slap in the face and getting the heck out of Los Angeles as fast as he can.

JF probably has a better upside but he isn't as familiar with the school and region. SS also understands the expectations better as USC is aiming higher than Vanderbilt.

Apparently SS is bringing his DC with him to USC, so UW could have multiple spots to fill.

Slap in the face? When is the interim coach promised anything?

He's been there longer than any other coach and most of the administration. He knows the school and they know him well. I could see him leaving if offered a HC job somewhere else but I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed.

did Sumlin turn USC down? The timing of this announcement and Sumlin's extension suggest-maybe?

Possibly, I don't know if they actually talked. Sumlin's agent also could have leveraged the interest (real or not) into a new deal.

From what I've heard, USC started to sour on Sumlin for some reason.

Is USC really a better job than A&M? Sumlin has solid job security, fantastic new facilities being built, is in the nation's premier conference and has solid recruiting classes lined up for 2014 and 2015. Plus- how much $ was USC willing to offer him theoretically? Were they willing to offset the sizable state income tax in CA vs. no state income tax in Texas? I know we all think College Station is a dump, but not everyone likes the big city.

ECM, I agree with you. If A&M needs anything, money is not a problem.

Sarkisian's Huskies went 8-4 this year. He stopped the hemorrhaging at a once big time program, which had gone winless as recently as 2008.
