June very successfully built a strange persona in Hawaii as some sort of pagan/christian hybrid spiritual leader. It is unavoidable in anything you read about his time there. He hasn't seemed to have that same traction here despite his supposed inner city ministry, etc.
But has one or more CoC member bought into it? Just as Tilton-style TV preachers and ridiculous faith healers get millions to make unbelievably irrational decisions with their money perhaps some key 'believers' have enough power in the CoC to be delaying the process?

I would argue that Phil Bennett was more Svengali than June.

Could be something there. More detail on the pagan/Christian spiritual leader thing, please. I do know that June is a Christian, which televangelists aside, is good. But tell us more about this "strange persona in Hawaii" thing you speak of.

I think that JJ created a little "Cult of Personality" while he was in HI. He was the man. He accomplished the unthinkable when he took that program over. Once the myth started to grow his communication style or total lack there of built into this. It is hard to discredit yourself as a genius if you don't open your mouth.

Translation of Eo na toa, eo no toa, e: "Respond fellow warriors, respond with one heart to the challenges that lie ahead of us."
That's not: "Find a chicken, spill its blood, and use the feet for dice."

I thought that translation was..... "come with me my warriors, we will get high and loiter on the north shore while those howlie chumps pay us for nothing"

I think all of that is pretty typical for "Hawaiian culture"
