Did anybody see A Football Life: Marty Schottenheimer last night? He's 70 years old but has the 6th most wins of an NFL coach all time; his record includes turning teams from among the worst team to the best team in his first season there. Coached the 2011 season for a UFL team because he missed teaching the game of football too much, won the championship, but quit b/c they weren't paying him or management was messed up or something like that. We don't know what the recruiting would be like, but there is the hope he would approach it like Larry did, and try to get the best he can get with an ambitious staff (who would flock to learn from him)... I think I'd love to watch some Marty Ball.

Schottenheimer isn't an HOFer, has no rings and never coached in college. He's not much like Brown except that they're both in their 70s.

I watched it - great show. But the coach to go after in that show was not Marty - but Bill Cowher.

We need to bring back the 'Stash - but a 'Stash that can coach.

we should also get Gruden to be on his staff. Maybe a coordinator or something?

His daughter is, or was enrolled at SMU I think.

Tx_Mustang10", I agree with you that Marty should be in the discussion, but as an assistant coach to his son, Brian Schottenheimer, the offensive coordinator with the Rams. That way, we would then have a young, energetic, successful coach at the helm that could be in place for many years to come and have his father in a supporting role as an assistant.

Well yeah. Of course we would want Bill Cowher. I've only ever heard that he is not looking for a job. And Brian S. would be good too, but I would guess he's going to ride this whole NFL thing out...
What Marty and LB have in common is they both have a consistent record of taking an awful team and turning it around into a playoff contender in their first season on the field/court. Marty doesn't have any rings (except his UFL ring), but I'm not expecting a National Championship for SMU under his tenure either--best in the conference would suffice for now. I'd think he deserves an interview.

There's not an NFL Coach I would want unless he came in with a well thought out strategic plan to hire the best COLLEGE assistants with strong recruiting backgrounds. See Jim Mora at UCLA. Sabin, Carroll, etc. Those are the former NFL Coaches that win. The NFL coaching mastermind ain't going to get you far. see Weiss at Kansas and June Jones or the former Dallas coach at Georgia Tech

I wish there could have at least been some shakeup in the staff to create an LB-like situation. Bring in Neuheisel as OC (random example) and a couple big time ex-nfl guys to recruit and coach the o-line, RBs and special teams haha...

That's the Larry Brown principal...hire a younger guy with head coaching experience and a ton of passion and energy acting as the old Guru's right hand man..and then some guys that are basically paid assassins on the recruiting front

The only two coaches that are analogous to Larry Brown are Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer. Both won national championships in college and Super Bowls in the NFL.
