Dumb Thought on June

I'm admittedly on the fence about June. I'm not crazy about his attitude (especially post-ASU). Like everyone else, I am very disappointed with the team's performance this season. On the other hand, i is very clear that the guy can coach. If we had had maybe a handful of playmakers, we should have beaten 3-4 more teams this year. It seems that June is a pretty decent chef, but he really doesn't want to go buy the groceries... So, why can't we set up someone who handles the recruiting for him? It's not like people don't know what it takes to play Juneball. Get in some young enthusiastic recruiting staff that know Texas and possibly Louisiana and turn them loose, and bring them to be coached by June. June doesn't have to mess with something he clearly is not interested in doing, and we have a chance at some talent.
And yes, I'm sure that the experts on the site will let me know exactly what NCAA rule or lack of funding makes this a bad idea, but it is my understanding that some schools essentially already do this...

If June was just a figurehead and had a staff of young ace recruiters, i bet most of us would back off him. Even though the 3rd and inches hail mary pass plays drive me nuts.

Great idea and perhaps part of the extension negotiations...

On the other hand without one player, that being Garrett Gilbert, we probably only win 3 games. Even if we get some so called good recruiters (who knows how to identify good recruiter on the staff?) the head coach needs to lead by example. Not good to have local high school coaches saying they have either never seen June on campus or that they have only seen him one time ever. I don't know of any good football school that does this.

I think you can make an argument for keeping Jones under the stipulation that he has a staff full of dynamic recruiters with Texas ties that could bring in the talent to run his system at a high level. The problem is that that direction, drive, and vision must come from the head coach. Jones doesn't emphasize recruiting and its reflected in who is on his staff. It all starts at the top.

Spurrier is a terrible recruiter but has a great group around him. He has the reputation of not recruiting but being the 'ole ball coach'

Spurrier is in these kids living rooms on a consistent basis. He may like to play golf a lot but he does get in the kids living room and the high school coaches see him. But then again he has to because he is in the SEC. But not the best recruiting personality.

June prefers to hire his old buddies that prefer to sit on their [deleted] all day and they enjoy it since nothing is expected of them. I don't think June would take kindly to having his lazy friends sh@t canned, especially when he's lazy and gets to keep his job

Perception is that he and many of his friends/coaches are at that stage of their life where they are just trying to hang in there a few more years to retirement and the pensions kick in. They do the coaching part they like which is gamedays and some planning. This compared to the young worker/coach who is driven to succeed and willing to sacrifice time spent with his family. This guy realizes recruiting is the name of the game and does all of the unpleasant stuff like recruiting which involves actually going to high school coaches offices and acting like you actually care about them and what they say if that is what it takes to get that next recruit. Mack Brown would even ask high school coaches for their ideas on different parts of the game, such as special teams. It made the little high school coach feel important and that coach could tell everyone he was helping Mack and the Longhorns win those championships! And he had a system for remembering their names if he saw them again. So SMU is stuck with the decision of being mediocre and going to a bowl or striving for greatness! What's it gonna be?

Come on guys if you have to force an executive to hire competent staff then he is not the right person to be an executive A two million dollar coach would hire the correct staff to win

Even if June were willing would competent staff even work for him? Young, ambitious assistants want to work for guys who can help them move up the ladder and from the looks of June's decaying coaching tree he's not one of those guys.

Is June honestly a good coach anymore? 3 years ago I would have agreed with you here, but after this year I think otherwise. Yeah the argument can be made that we could have won a few more games with more talent, but i think we could have one 3-4 more games this year with a better game plan and play calling. I just think the run n shoot is predictable and outdated and other than one pistol package installed and a somewhat no huddle offense we haven't evolved. Even Jon Gruden was a rn n shoot guy in the 80's but transformed into a west coast Offense, I think June is outdated and is best served as a qb coach somewhere at this point
