Would have been a good year to go after Chad Morris

Postby Rebel10 » Mon Dec 23, 2013 1:49 pm

No other decent schools out there have coaching vacancies except Texas and Texas is going for a really big name coach. Next year might not be the same. Oh well, I guess we will see what happens.

Yep. I was holding out hope that SMU was evaluating the landscape to determine whether this was the right year to make a change based on other vacancies. Turns out that this *is* the year to make a change but we instead decided to extend June's freaking contract.

Only one high profile vacancy and Texas, like you said, isn't going to go after a coordinator. Would have been a good year to go hunting for an up and coming coach looking for his first head coaching job.

Sad. Timing has never been one of SMU strong points.

The timing of the announcement was definitely done on purpose. They anticipated backlash and tried to minimize the impact by announcing it around Christmas. It is weak and indicative of the fact SMU has its hands tied with Jones and his staff. From what I understand, buying out Jones and the staff was very steep, and even though we're certainly not one to set standards for how to operate a football program, programs don't have a coach entering his last year of contract.

If there is no buyout after 2014, then this is as good as we could expect. Hopefully, we'll cut ties with him after next year and send him packing with no buyout because there is no way he will do better next year, with Gilbert out and another abysmal recruiting class coming in.

I was talking about the timing of the coaching search. Cheated at the wrong time. We got the DP at the worst time. We got bad at the wrong time. We got a president that wanted to change the school rather than try to rebuild. We got into a BCS conference at the wrong time. Steinberg blew the ASU deal at the wrong time.

You get my drift. All of it is our own doing, but we made the wrong decisions at the wrong time to stay competitive in the modern college sports environment.

The whole point of the post was that the this year probably would be as good of a year as any to get Morris. But I know we may not have had to money to fire June this year. I was just making an observation.

We got into a BCS conference that immediately collapsed, and in the last year of the BCS... #FAIL

We will see maybe next what transpires. I don't going .500 with the easier conference schedule next year will be enough to save June's job. Especially since he keeps down talking the school publicly.

This is the national headline and anyone not on Ponyfans thinks we should be building a statue for him and that those whining for his firing are ingrates:

"Jones led SMU to back-to-back Conference USA Western Division Co-Championships in 2009 and 2010, and guided the Mustangs to four straight bowl berths, winning three. Jones has also helped numerous Mustangs reach the next level, with 14 Mustangs currently on NFL rosters - Chris Banjo, Kelvin Beachum, Cole Beasley, Richard Crawford, Margus Hunt, Darius Johnson, Bryan McCann, Josh LeRibeus, Zach Line, Sterling Moore, Thomas Morstead, Aldrick Robinson, Emmanuel Sanders and Taylor Thompson."

(I agree with the "ingrates").

With all that you would think he would have better than a 6-31 record vs winning teams or better than a 7 win regular season.

Too bad schools don't get ranked for putting guys in the NFL. He does do that well.

Exactly. Most of these nfl players were not his recruits and he continues to get credit for this. And why have his teams so dramatically underpeformed if they had so much talent????

To be fair I think he signed half of the guys on the list.
