Funniest thing JJ has said since, "We're a recruiting class and a half away".

Does he (or Hart for that matter) have a clue how divided the Pony Nation is over this extension? I don't know of anyone happy about this. But if he's interested at all and wants to attempt to make this mess right, in my opinion he needs to start with:

1. Hire new young assistants that will challenge him (he's clearly out of touch).
2. Get in the field and recruit himself
3. NO more Hawaiian crap - ZERO!
4, Respect SMU and it's traditions

Just a few thoughts ...

1. Never
2. EVER
3. ever ever ever
4. going to happen

We're boned.

On a side note, apparently dropping an F bomb on here, but spelling it with a "Ph", because I was getting in touch with my inner Korean, instead of the F, is frowned upon.... :(

I found that press release announcing Jones' contract to be fairly interesting on several points.

First, it's a 3-year deal instead of the (minimal) 2-year that I think most were expecting. I assume this was to give some assurances of more stability for the program.

Hart: "We look forward to partnering with Coach Jones as we now set our sights on the next phase of our rise to prominence: establishing SMU football as a championship program. Coach Jones and his staff share and embrace the high expectations for our program and the challenge of taking SMU football from good to great."
Translation: The PonyNation is dissatisfied with 6 wins. I hear you and we expect more going forward.

"There is no place I'd rather be than here at SMU," said Jones. "I am proud of the progress we have made thus far, but many goals remain unfinished, including restoring SMU football's championship tradition."
Translation: Sorry about ASU; won't happen again. My boss has made it clear I need to win conference titles in addition to going to Hawaii.

"Athletics is and always will be an integral part of the SMU experience," said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. "As we take the next step in our quest to establish SMU football as a championship program, it will require increased effort from the entire university community, and I can affirm the campus-wide commitment to this goal."
Translation: We understand that half-assed doesn't work. I'm tired of hate mail. I'm in of you guys are, however, if you want the university to go all-in, you'll need to give us us a chance and you'll also need to open your checkbooks.
"It’s hard to overstate how impressive SMU has been on the recruiting trail since the ACC announced the Mustangs would be joining the league”

This is a joke. The only reason June is still here is because he can't get another job and we don't want to pay the buyout. He's not the right person going forward and he's done absolutely nothing in the past 2 years for anyone to want him to continue to be the coach. This is a bunch of PR nonsense to pretend like this was a good move

wow web - i thought i leaned to the sunshine side until i read your post. i wish i had that optimism.

The fact remains - nobody should have to point all that out to a coach that is worth squat - and SMU for sure should not have to influence it through any contorted contract extension. Our coach should be chewing on nails and running through walls - and asking everyone on his team to do the same - and no amount of cajoling will change someone who doesn't have that drive into someone who does.

In no way do I believe this press conference was filled with a bunch of passive aggressive, read between the lines, statements to get June in line in year 7. This is laughable.

June Jones has ZERO job security after 2014. ZERO. It actually might be interesting how he approaches the 2014 season with his coaching future (above the Sun Belt line) hanging in the balance. 2017-yeah right. It ain't going to cost SMU jack to get rid of this guy in 2014

Slow down. Believing something and finding parts of a press release to be "interesting" are far from the same thing. There definitely is some PR-speak, but he also raises some ideas that merit serious consideration.
