Steelers' Beachum has brains to match brawn

PITTSBURGH – Football has been Kelvin Beachum’s primary focus since the Steelers drafted him in the seventh round a year ago. But the team’s 24-year-old starting left tackle has a pretty good fallback plan once his NFL career ends.
Beachum has an economics degree from Southern Methodist and a master’s in liberal studies, with a concentration on organizational behavior. He also served as the student representative to the SMU Board of Trustees, and was on SMU president R. Gerald Turner’s Commission of Substance Abuse, the Student Affairs Leadership Council and the SMU Athletic Council.
“It’s good to have that experience because it gives you another perspective on life, another perspective of what goes on behind the scenes, why things happen, why athletes are treated like they are treated,†Beachum said.
