Beachum: "I want to be great"

Teresa Varley
Steelers.com

Tackle Kelvin Beachum talks about his season and his plan for what is ahead this offseason.
It had been less than 24 hours since the 2013 season had ended and Kelvin Beachum sat by himself in the player’s lounge just off the Steelers locker room watching game film.

He didn’t have to. It wasn’t required, wasn’t part of the postseason wrap-up for the players. But to get to where he wants to be, he knew it was a step in the right direction, using every opportunity to evaluate his own play.

“I want to be great. Simply put,” said Beachum. “I don’t want to just be a guy wearing a jersey. I don’t want to just be a Steeler who has come through here. I want to make an impact. I want to be influential.”

I am sure Kelvin has better things in his future but this is the type of person I would like to see back at SMU as an assistant coach and recruiter. Someone with SMU ties who can sell the school, the team, the area, etc. He could be a Klemm type. Banjo could probably do the same thing. I would really like to get some SMU blood into our recruiting.

I couldn't agree more. This guy is special. Given his experience along the line, he'd be a great O-line coach and his personality speaks for itself. A fine representative of SMU in many ways.

He may be at a level above where he would be at SMU but I would gladly have him as an assistant if he desired so.

I got to meet Ramon back in his playing days...might have been his 7th or 8th year of eligibility. Can't remember for sure. :D He is a good guy though and very personable.

Beach is definitely one of those guys you love to hear talk about his passion for the game and his work ethic.

I do hope when his playing days are over 5+ years from now that he will consider coming back and giving back to the program.

I am still amazed how he has a baby face after several years in the NFL, and when did he get married?

Beach has come a long way from the "diamond in the rough" recruit so many were calling him when SMU offered that 'ship

I shook my head when SMU signed Beach. I thought it was a wasted scholarship.

Crow never tasted so good. I have said many times how wrong I was, as Beach has become one of my all-time favorites. He looks like a guy who's going to be in the NFL for a long time.

It would be cool to bring Beach back to speak to the team, maybe during spring drills. Talk about a guy who made the most of his opportunity at SMU.
