Sad state of many colleges with the approval of the ncaa, nba and nfl. Many of these players should be going to junior colleges before moving on to the pros or improving their academics and moving to 4 year colleges. But many are difference-makers and can be the difference between a conf championship and a national championship. Exploited big-time and then out on the streets when they can't play any more. then you have the kids who are well-rounded in academics and athletics who aren't getting scholarships and may have to walkon.

I don't care if half our team can't read if we get into a P5 conference. There. I said it.

These players are just lucky they are athletic, otherwise they would be working at pizza hut. They aren't being "exploited" because those that are semi illiterate wouldn't be going to college anyway. At least some percentage of them are making it to the pros. A small percentage, but some.

And you can bet that plenty of players in the nba, nfl are not much more educated. Education and athletic performance have incredibly little correlation.

The have been and are being exploited b/c nobody has forced them to work hard in the classroom. Unfortunately, they have been taught that athletic ability is the only factor in obtaining a college scholarship.

While there are a few people with learning disabilities who aren't capable of learning, almost everyone should be literate by the time they "graduate" high school. They should be able to read. They should be able to write. They should be able to do some math. They should have basic knowledge of history and the world around them.

If we raise the bar on academics for everyone (and give kids time to adapt), I believe that kids will be able to meet those standards.

You can raise the bar all you want but you will still have the same results with the individual kids if they do not have support mechanisms in place to help them imo.

Agreed. I just believe that high expectations are part of that support system.

Changes are coming-in the 2016 recruiting class which teams will be recruiting in starting in about 9 months-schools will have to adjust or 3/4th of their recruiting classes aren't going to be eligible at least as freshman because they will be forced to redshirt. Actually might help the Big 10. SEC and some Big 12 teams like Tech, Oklahoma St., Kansas St. and OU are going to be materially damaged by these changes because a bunch of those 4-5 stars aren't going to playing as freshman to replace 40 or so SEC guys heading to the NFL in the Undergraduate Draft. Academic schools like Vandy, Duke, Stanford, Notre Dame, Northwestern and others will have an even better shot at competitive programs. Basketball is especially going to be hit hard-can a school afford to take an entire class that will be ineligible as Freshman? I doubt it.

The illiterate, super talented athlete will find a way. There's no way some super talented player is going to miss out on college sports because of his academics. The less talented ones maybe, but the real superstars won't be affected other than needing a few extra back door deals

It happens all the time. A lot of these kids are going to have to go the JUCO route. If you follow up in August with the NCAA Clearinghouse and non-qualifiers-most every major school especially in the south loses multiple recruits-some more- to qualification issues. Rivals usually publishes an Enrolled Ranking which re-ranks recruiting classes deducting the non-qualifiers. You will find that most all major programs lose top national recruits

I'm saying the cam newtons of the world never "don't qualify". Someone is watching out for them from the start
