Well, with the way the gutless shills in our Athletic Department handled Junes extension, I would say expect something in the basement janitors closet and the announcement will be made after it happens.

Chill out. The extension isn't worth the paper it's written on after 2014. No one was willing to write the multimillion dollar check to buy out JJ after 2013, so he's still here. After 2014, he's likely gone unless he somehow manages a winning record against a schedule more difficult than last year with less talent.

Blaming Rick Hart is pretty naive...there wasn't much else he could do.

Amazing how facts tend to kill a decent conversation.

I was talking about how they announced the extension and then everyone went on vacation and they closed the university. That's what I meant by gutless

I doubt Rick wanted to make a spectacle of it.

Also, June might have been waiting for a better offer that didn't come and finally accepted the extension

I sure hope you are right, ECM. That would make me feel better about the whole thing. Looking at it objectively, Hart was indeed in a tough spot. No one wanted to buy out June and if he fired him, to the "outside world" we look like dopes ("you FIRE the guy who brought you out of basement dweller status?!?"). On the other hand, it would make a strong statement: "hey, there's a new sheriff in town and we don't accept mediocrity at SMU anymore. We want to compete for national championships and feel we have everything we need right here: great city, great school, great tradition. With the right coaching staff, we have everything to make that a reality" (you know, kind of like LB). At this point, it was all probably a business decision and was about the money. He's probably thinking, "ok, we stink it up next year but then we make some big changes". At least, I hope so.

Again, Rick didnt have many options. You don't let a coach go into the last year of his deal; however, no one was willing to pony up the cash to buyout June and his staff. So 2014 is a make or break year for June, if I'm reading the tea leaves correctly. We can axe him and his staff after next season for cheap if there's not significant improvement shown

I still don't see how we are all confident that his buyout is negligible for next year. Has this been confirmed?

Only people involved in the negotiations can confirm it...don't hold your breath.

From what I understand, the buyout is very manageable after this season.

Based on what? I seriously doubt SMU or JJ would release details of any deal.
