happy to report that while reading my Texas Bar Journal that they had a story that he had won this prestigious Houston area award. Cormier was the 2nd African American player to receive a football scholarship to SMU and was an outstanding player. Legend was that he was the only player to tackle Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owns behind line of scrimmage all year in SMU's huge upset of OU-he did it multiple times. I know SMU has honored him in an academic sense but I wonder considering his lifetime achievements both athletically and academically whether he deserves more consideration for SMU's Athletic Hall of Fame

Thanks for posting this item about Cormier. We were at a NYE party and there was a TV set in the basement which finally received almost all my attention until the game was over.

Lots of memorable SMU names besides Cormier suited out that night: Fleming, Hixson, Levias, Portillo, Richardson...

IIRC Sports Illustrated called it one of the better bowl games that year in spite of the fact that no issue like a high final ranking or national championship was involved.
