I find it interesting that the staff responds to questions and always refers to June Jones. "I’m fully committed to Coach (June) Jones and to SMU, and my only desire is to be here at SMU." I have never seen this from any other college staffers. I just find it odd.

Why? He's their boss and they like him. If a basketball assistant said "I'm committed to Larry Brown" would any of us find it odd? It seems like every player who plays for JJ and every coach who works for him seems to really like him. If I like you and you're paying me a good salary to do something I like, I'd say the same thing. Plus, don't Phillips and JJ have a long-standing friendship (or didn't Phillips play for JJ) from before his arrival at SMU? Seems like an obvious reaction.

Phillips did play for JJ and I'm not finding fault. It is just an observation that all comments seems to reference JJ. It is just a mannerism that this staff has taken on that I haven't seen from other college coaching staffs. I don't know if it is a result of this staff being particularly tight knit or some other reason.

How many of them would have D-1 jobs if it weren't for C. Jones? Haering, our "Special Teams Coach," Suan, Morrison, etc.

Maybe they are aware of all the discussion about JJ and responding to that subconsciously, or consciously, to show support.

When you get a bunch of friends and "yes" men around you singing your praises it makes for a very comfortable surroundings. Videos on you tube, golf, home early for dinner.....unfortunately football is about being uncomfortable, hard work and never being satisfied because you know your competitors are working hard too. Once your goal is mediocre and happy you are doomed to succeed. Think Saban is happy at Alabama after just missing a national championship on the last play of a game. Think Central florida is content. No...they are trying to get better. SMU?

This is crazy. When SMU hired him, the reaction was universally positive, from PonyFans and from coaches and media around the country. A hell of a lot of people out there, other than some of the people on this board, like and respect JJ. There's no question he's an odd cat, and he does some head scratchers, but to blame him for hiring people he knows is silly. If I ran a business, I would hire people I know and trust, too.
