Do any of you knowledgable folks know if we even made an effort to get Brewer to transfer to SMU?

You answered the question yourself. Effort. Translation? No we did not.

We have a very good young QB on campus now. Why would Brewer want to come here and be a backup? He needs to go where he can play.

Because he could come here and start. Absolutely nothing to date puts Burcham on an untouchable pedestal compared to a former Big 12 starting QB that absolutely shredded our defense for 5 touchdowns.

Actually he's much more likely to be a backup at VT as they have several legit players to compete against him. Competition wasn't the issue, Brewer really wanted to play football at a P5 school.

Mayfield was the one that shredded our defense

I think Cassel wins the job in the spring.

Kliff has so many QBs transferring out I guess I can't keep them straight.

Maybe he could come and start. He's older and has more experience, but in SMU's offense, he would be 2 years behind Burcham. Saying he could come in and beat out Burcham and the other QBs is opinion and a guess.
I'm curious to see how Burcham and Cassell look, and I'm not sure Krstich isn't in the mix somewhere. He looked OK in his brief appearance against UCF.

Why do you think he will?

Nothing more than a gut feeling honestly. Cassel's videos on youtube look really good (albeit he's playing Washington State HS football) and in the few practices I saw last fall he could really sling it.

I thought Burcham looked great in practice, but I have heard rumblings to watch Cassel make a move on the starting job this spring.
Kind of scares me because in a perfect world, Burcham would have blown the socks off everyone enough to be a clear cut starter going into spring. Obviously, there must be some reservations...

Its probably Burcham's job to lose but of the diamond in the rough QB's that June has brought here Kolney Cassel at least has the requisite arm strength to play at the D1A level. Burcham threw some real floaters that got sniped against USF and Houston. Hopefully the light comes on for one of them and we don't see a huge drop off.
