Jason Garrett

Postby mustang1108 » Thu Mar 27, 2014 3:24 pm

I know this may seem crazy and I may get torched for posting this, but this is simply a hypothetical and just trying to see what everyone thinks about the idea. Obviously we're stuck with June for what could be 3 more years, but after seeing how much Jason Garrett loves the Ponies, could anyone actually see him being a coach here on the Hilltop? I think there is a good chance he will not be the Cowboys coach after next season. I know some of the blame falls on him as the head coach, but I have been convinced going back to the Bill Parcells years that it does not matter who the coach is as long as Jerry is the GM because he is setting the team up for failure. I think Garrett could be a good head coach and I know he doesn't have college experience, but I seem to remember a guy named Butch Davis taking over Miami with no head coaching experience and turning that program around and he did the same thing at UNC prior to getting in trouble. So I think it is possible that Jason Garrett could be a good fit in the college game and at SMU. Again I am probably going to get laughed at for this, but I am just curious what other people think.

It was actually discussed in another thread. Not the worst idea IMO. Althought JJ won't be here three more years- he's out after a 4-8 season in 2014

Sorry East Coast. I didn't see it on the other thread. And I agree with you about JJ being gone after next year, but was just trying to stay PC on the comment.

Can't see any interest on his end, his career is still viable enough to pursue better openings (NFL HC, NFL OC, P5 HC)

Trying to come up with the name of any college player he recruited. Not sure he would be the right medication for what ails us. Like putting a cast on a headache.

I like jason Garrett, but we need someone who recruits like his hair is on fire. That is not going to be anyone from an NFL background.

Depends on who from the pro ranks. Seems to be working for UCLA.

I had the same thought. Not sure he thought that comment through.

Another guy that come to mind with little to no college experience and being extremely successful was Pete Carrol. He seemed to do ok at USC. We would just need to bring in a good recruiting coordinator.

exactly; the head coach is the closer...not your lead recruiter. Just need a strong staff doing the legwork. If it turns out that both JJ and Garrett are "out of work" in the same time frame, Garrett might be an interesting option. As for those who are concerned about a big pay cut, I understand he lives in HP and if he loves it and the money is enough to sustain his standard of living...why would he not consider SMU? He's seen (at Moody this year) what a quality program can attract in terms of local enthusiasm for SMU athletics

i was right behind him and romo all game. Yelled "fire June" when the smu football video came on. Garrett heard it for sure, he turned around looked for who said it and was kinda smirking haha. So based on that two second interaction my theory is yep hes the next guy in line.

A note on Jason Garrett: a friend knows one of the Cowboys' assistant coaches, who told him that throughout the NFL offseason, Garrett regularly ended meetings with his coaching staff by saying, "hey, guys, don't forget: there's an SMU basketball game tonight over at Moody."

I'll go out on a limb and suggest he's the first Cowboys coach ever to push SMU hoops to his staff!
