Knew his name was gonna come up. He's a talent, but I've heard he's had attitude problems since he was a freshman in HS.

Getting escorted off the practice field at Clemson by police is not a good look.

I remember hearing last offseason he was thought to be a package deal with Chad Morris if he left Clemson for any other jobs

I don't think SMU should be a program that takes people who have worn out their welcome somewhere else...in particular criminal offenses, discipline problems...Team chemistry along with hard work from the coaches and players and fan support equal success. Why try to take a shortcut?

Colt brennan was in jail when june recruited him and they went to the sugar bowl together. Miami had a lot of thugs and they won a couple national titles. We are not taking shortcuts now and we are mediocre so why not

I don't have a problem giving guys second chances, provided they haven't done anything too egregious.

That wouldn't be taking a shortcut, many of these problem children move to new schools and become rehabilitated (June did it a few times at Hawaii). Taking shortcuts is what we do on the recruiting trail (and is the reason why our talent level has steadily declined these past few seasons).

when you can't sign 4/5 stars straight out of HS (mainly because you don't even TRY!!) - you have to take a short cut.

Colt Brennan
Garrett Gilbert

June makes his bones on 2nd chance guys.

This is obviously a hypothetical and wouldnt happen, but imagine if chad kelly and a doriel green beckham type of talent both transferred to smu, or any other smaller program for that matter, that program would get a huge talent infusion of guys that we would have had no shot at coming out of high school. So taking shortcuts can be a very good thing.

Thats just looking at guys with off the field issues, then theres the Gilbert Max wittek examples of guys looking for a second chance because they got beat out on the field at the first school. Lots of opportunity to succeed with second chance guys

why take a short cut? Because if you don't do the heavy lifting of forming relationships and exerting some effort to recruit in Texas, than all you have is a bunch of hodge-podge second chance efforts to try to throw a band aid on your team every year.

in other words - we have no choice but to take short cuts.

Just about every team outside of the major colleges that is good thrives off of transfers. Take a look at the UofH roster and what they bring in on a yearly basis.

This is life in the position that we are in. Every year, we will hold over some scholarships hoping to attract transfers.

We seem to have had some luck in 'taking a short cut' in basketball - I don't hear anybody complaining about them, and they were given spots to kids who had done nothing wrong and were let go from the team simply because they weren't going to contribute on the floor (even if they did keep their scholarships).

Take the transfers, just make sure the kid isn't a psycho. I trust both JJ and LB on their character judgements.

June has more luck with upperclassmen QBs than he has ever had with recruiting freshman QBs

Dan Robinson (5th year Senior when June got Hawaii job)
Colt Brennen (Colorado transfer)
Nick Rolovich (All-American JUCO transfer)
McDermott (NMSU transfer)
Gale Gilbert (Texas transfer)
