Quite possible. What he did in each sport was incredible. To reach that level in two sports is unreal.

I think he gets lost because he was the ultimate grinder in each sport. He gets very few mentions in the Pony Express stories, and he is arguably the most decorated member of the group.

he doesn't get mentioned because we had a lot more dominant players than Michael Carter who really reached his potential in the NFL. Harvey Armstrong who was First Team All American for one was a better college DLM than Carter

Roy Martin ran track for us until his McDonald's habit kicked in.

Joe and Gene Pouncy should be in the discussion. I still think Carl Wright was the best "athletic" athlete we've had in major sports

Nobody will ever do what Gary Hammond did again with with All-SWC honors at 3 different positions in 3 years-WR, RB and QB

Jerry Heidenreich, George Hardie and Steve Lundquist, each a four year All-American in their respective sports. Jerry and Steve have more than 5 Olympic Gold Metals between them. Would have been more if ole Jimbo Carter hadn't cancelled the USA participation in the 1980 Moscow Games because of Afghanistan.

Slight addition for the rest of the story. The 3rd year he played QB for us but another QB was named ALL SWC at that position. I am too old to recall who. But Gary was so good he was named ALL SWC as an athlete. I do not believe they had done that in the past. But yes, he was named 3 years in a row while playing 3 different positions.
