We should do whatever it takes to get BYU in the AAC. Major name brand program that travels well and knocks off P5 teams (see: Texas last year)

BYU is a nightmare conference partner. They play by an entirely different set of rules in Provo. Not to mention they've got a pretty sweet deal w/ ESPN and the ability to schedule whoever they want whenever they want. The AAC would have to bend over backwards to satisfy BYU.

The more likely and more advantageous scenario for SMU would be a new conference that comprises the schools out of the MWC and AAC that are willing and able to compete financially with the new rules put in place by the P5. There are maybe 12-14 schools in the G5 that can realistically pull that off.

West - BYU, Boise State, Colorado State, UNLV, SMU, Houston
East - Cincinnati, Memphis, Central Florida, South Florida, East Carolina, UCONN

Given the budgeting pitfalls facing the California schools I have left them off the list. However, if they could be convinced to float the boat you add SDSU and Fresno State into the mix.

West - SDSU, Fresno State, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, UNLV, SMU
East - Cincinnati, Memphis, Houston, Central Florida, South Florida, East Carolina, UCONN


That conference could probably pull a much better TV deal than the current AAC deal and would be FAR better than what the MWC currently offers. You could have games starting at 10AM EST all the way through midnight with the west coast games. You have markets in San Diego, Salt Lake City, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Cincinnati, Memphis, Orlando, Tampa, etc. That would also be one helluva basketball conference.

This is the endgame. Everyone else either drops football or plays in a glorified D1AA.

Agreed SMT. That would be a solid conference for us. Boise and BYU coming here would generate more excitement in the DFW area than any conference game we've played in awhile

BYU will probably not happen. They will demand a bigger chunk of the TV payout, no games on Sundays and second/third tier rights. Granted that conference you mention will move the TV $$ dial more than MWC or AAC can by themselves.

After going to the BYU Texas game in Austin I wanted to schedule a home and home with them seeing the way their fans travel. Would definitely be a great non conference game if we couldnt get them to join the American.

BYU will keep its independent status for now. Powerful program. The "Notre Dame" of the inner mountain west if your LDS.

And as far as Boise playing in Dallas? are you kidding? tired of matchups that have nothing to do with the schools themselves. What the hell do we have in common with a junior college in the northwest?
I"m sure Boise will generate a lot of interest in the metroplex (NOT).

Maybe I missed it in the article, what happens if BYU tanks and wins five games or less this year?

Colorado State is in a worse financial position than the California schools. I also seem to remember reading that Nevada is not doing too well either.

ISn't CSU building a new 40,000 seat football stadium? Thought I'd read that somewhere; if so, they're wasting a lot of money if they're not going to commit the additional resources needed to compete at the new high level

Exactly, if you are going to play a tough opponent fill your stadium. Boise would get 20-22,000 at most. That's also the reason that playing all those PAC12 teams will never happen. We aren't a draw to them and they aren't a draw for us-they don't need non-BCS road games so everybody would just be a lot happier playing someone else. Plus the high profile teams can get a national spotlite game in DFW by playing at JerryWorld. More money-more exposure than playing in diminuative Ford Stadium. You guys will likely get your wish because few BCS teams are going to play in Ford in the future especially if we can't play A&M, Tech, TCU and Baylor because they tackle too hard. But for comparison sake-note those games make perfect economic sense for everybody because they are drawing huge attendance both home and away.
