In Payoff Era, G5 Sees Big Payouts, Big Expenses-CBS Sports

IRVING, Texas – Unlimited meals.

Flight plans for families of recruits.

Better post-career health care.

Athletic department expenses will balloon as the power conferences recreate some of the rules, and commissioners from the smaller leagues have to consider all the financial implications.

Mainly, what are you willing to pay?

Because the player stipend – often called ‘covering cost of attendance – is just an appetizer. The push from the five biggest conferences – SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC – to approve different ways to spend their money on athletes could apply pressure on the American, Mountain West, MAC, C-USA and Sun Belt to keep up.

That's just fine with Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson, who said at this week's College Football Playoff meetings outside of Dallas that his league can do what it wants, too.

Ole Miss' AD said that their estimates are that providing full meal plans for all athletes will cost between $400,000 and $500,000 a year over and above the costs Ole Miss is already paying to operate a dining room in the football training facility with a full time sports nutritionist.

While it's good for athletes to be able to get proper meals on the schedule that the training staff feels they need them, that's going to end up being something that a lot of G5 schools just can't afford to do.

We can afford it. We are a Big 12 team in the G5 if you judge our facilities, donors, location, etc.

Why don't you add something constructive to the conversation? Half of your posts are accusing me of being FTHP and the other half are saying I am an idiot. Only 1% of the time you do post something relevant.

What are you going to add to this thread that doesn't involve your bogus, unfounded claims?

----- now back to the topic at hand ----

It seems that they are treating the G5 as a whole as if it was one of the P5's. The G5 will be getting 1/6th of the money from the contract, they get an automatic bid into a bowl, etc.) So I don't see it as it being all bad. The AAC being the strongest conference has a good argument in sending our champion to the auto bid, and if push comes to shove, we could just merge the best G5 programs that can both keep up with the P5 in the fields and in expenses into a 10-12 team conference.

East: UConn, Cincinnati, Memphis, ECU, UCF, USF
West: SMU, Boise State, Houston, BYU, Fresno State, SDSU

The rest of the lower G5 (Sunbelt, CUSA, MAC), the MWC, Tulsa, Tulane, Temple...will not be able to keep up.
