No way were we ranked 22 when we played Texas in 1980.

I wondered that too but wasn't alive then so didn't feel I had any place to really question it.

Wikipedia says we were unranked, and the internet is never wrong

Too much blame on the administration and not enough on June. Holland should have mentioned that the basketball and football programs have the same administration but differences in how they approach recruiting are why one is doing so much better than the other.

Before the UT game SMU had just lost that heart-breaking game in Waco when Ford fumbled on 1st and 1 from the 1 (something like 32-28-SMU blew 21-0 lead) and then lost 13-11 to a strong UH team in an uninspired performance at Texas Stadium. We might have been close to ranked coming into Baylor game. Baylor was SWC Champs and UH was probably a Top 25 team and defending SWC Champs

SMU was No. 20 coming into Baylor game-truly one of the greatest games I've ever seen and truly devastating to me. With a little break at the 1 yard line at Baylor and a poor performance at Texas Tech SMU's talented Sophomore class might have had another SWC championship. But we might not have seen the debut of McIlhenny until 1981 and the running game would have been stunted. I wish there was a highlite reel of that game like there is for the 1982 SMU v Tech game. Wow guess I'm not the only one-Dave Campbell who witnesses about 7 decades of great SWC games also picked the 1980 SMU v Baylor game as his All-Time Classic

ED talked about the need for SMU to bring people "back" to the program to help with recruiting. I wouldn't have any problem with ED as a recruiting coordinator, would you?

Yes, because much of the job of a recruiting coordinator as I understand it is coordinating the staff's efforts and I do not think being a big name helps with that. It sounds like you just mean having him as a closer or something along those lines maybe?

Any way that he can be involved in recruiting is good with me.

Love me some ED, but he's a JJ apologist. One of the reasons it's hard to get rid of JJ. It would [deleted] people like him off and we really need to not do that.

What, specifically, is the administration doing to hold back JJ's recruiting?!?

They haven't provided JJ with big enough team meeting rooms...............

Not being a JJ fan, but the vibe you get from the administration makes it seem like they are not committed to football success, and that is evident in how almost perfect basketball is being handled and how bush league the football program is ran.
Yeah yeah they did bring down the standards, etc. but the commitment does not show and people notice.

If you are a kid and have a choice between SMU, Baylor, TCU, and Texas Tech (our natural rivals), the odds he picks SMU are becoming pretty slim especially now that the perception is that we are a "basketball school" and those schools will not only use that against us, but also tout the fact that they play in the big boy leagues and have a shot at the CFP/National title.

Blaming Administration is an easy way out concerning this topic. This is a much more complex and nuance issue.

Consider our non-P5 conference, coaching staff's energy and commitment to recruiting and the need to increase the spirit/enthusiasm of student, alumni and fan attendance. I don't buy the win first and the attendance will improve point of view.
