Richard Durrett, who spent the last five years at ESPNDallas.com and ESPN 103.3 FM, after nine years with the Dallas Morning News, died Tuesday at the age of 38. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
Most know his work covering the Rangers, but overall, he was a great reporter. Through his occasional visits to SMU to cover the Mustangs, it was obvious he was a better person. He was a terrific reporter who did his homework and sounded as if he knew the team, even when he didn't cover the Ponies on a regular basis. More importantly, he had a personality that made other people — players, coaches, other members of the media — like him instantly.
Durrett is survived by his wife and two children. Thoughts go out to his family. I consider myself very lucky to have been his friend.
