That's the thing: we don't have to. Our value proposition is much different.

A&M is: SEC, fancy football facilities, be a part of the program that Johnny built

SMU is: Dallas, great academics, be a part of a program you can build

I'm not saying we can win many recruiting battles against A&M, but there have to be a few kids that are looking to stay close to home (see Frazier, Keith), get a good education, and are willing to put in the work to build a program on their own shoulders. For those select few, those fancy football facilities at A&M just don't matter.

I don't see why we can't be the landing place for every 4 and 5 star kid who didn't work our somewhere else who either wants to come "back" to Dallas or realizes that toilets like Lubbock, College Station, Ames or Lawrence aren't what they had in mind... Or who did Austin just a little too weird or the microscope too big for their liking.

In other words why don't we point to GG and be the Eastern Washington of the BigXII

Is it me and my traditional view that athletics in part of the college experience, which historically wasn't over the top facilities, which are better than professional sports in some cases?

My reaction is a bit of embarrassment for this conspicuous consumption and displays of money. Hard to understand that sports in college did and should contribute to the development of character. I struggle when I see this.

Do they really need a backlit picture of themselves to find their lockers? Flatscreens lining the hottub and in front of every sink? Wow, this is getting out of control. It's amazingly nice, but talk about a sense of entitlement.
