Could minor league football be coming

Postby AusTxPony » Mon Aug 11, 2014 4:22 pm

Similar to Minor League Baseball? Run by the NFL for kids who have no interest in education and are in it for the money, could this work? Say about 48 teams. (They could play in the spring.) Then Universities could go back to the student-athlete. Some modest stipends for all student-athletes, and more closely resembling what we have had for a hundred years in college sports.

It would only work if the salaries are legit. Can't see the NFL wanting to incur the costs of a full scale minor league when the NCAA already runs one for them.

This has always been the problem. The NFL doesn't want to pay for it because it would not be economically profitable. Its so much more fun the blame the NCAA when all schools are trying to do is run their programs in accordance with their institutional model. Interesting poll on MSN today-72% still favor the academic model to college football and don't think players should get more than scholarship, room and board. About the only way to stop this freight train now is Congressional action to amend the Sherman Anti-Trust Act because the academic model has a long string of losses as an affirmative defense in the courtroom

I figured Title IX would be the nail in the coffin for paying players above their scholarship, room and board, and current stipend amount. Do you see P5 schools paying a similar equal amount to a women's track athlete? I understand Title IX was not intended to target athletics, but equal opportunities in education opportunities. The legislation states:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

As far as college football is associated with education, I just don't see how the Jim Delaney's and Larry Scott's of the world are going to weasel there way around Title IX.

I believe the judge point out that it would only be for football and basketball in licensing since they are the revenue sports. The Olympic sports have for flexible rules anyway. Plus you could just increase stipends and not call it paying players but it would be the same thing.

Considering minor leaguers in baseball on average make $600 - $1,200 monthly, should be interesting question to consider.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I think there are two separate stipends-actually 3

stipend for advertising/licensure use
proposed stipend for full cost of attendance

we already have stipend for room and board

I doubt Title IX applies to the first but its going to be hard to deny it applies to the other two

those costs over and above tuition, room, board and meals that a typical student might expect to pay while attending college. The NCAA hasn't really defined it yet although they did originally authorize a flat $2,000 in 2011 which was eventually overruled by full Division 1A membership before it went into effect.
