We definitely need Line, P. and the running game to pick up the slack this season.

I thnk they can, assuming their plays get called.

Shocking an NFL slant to a Goose Gosselin SMU article-of all the players to highlite Prescott Line is exactly who SMU fans can't wait to hear more about. Why are we stuck with this NFL clown who knows nothing about college football?

Yeah, a story on our 2nd string RB in an offense that just runs draw plays versus the QB situation where the real important story is.

That's great to hear P. Line is the best blocking back he's had, but we better not just see him in passing and running situations. Loved his brother, but Prescott is not the answer. Gotta see lots of Pope and the Frosh.

Awesome. If he's such a great blocker put him at fullback and let him clear the way for Pope or Gresham. On 3rd and 4th down and a half yard, put the QB under center for a QB sneak, or run some power with Line at fullback.

Nothing more frustrating than a 3rd or 4th and short incomplete pass, or stuffed draw play up the gut out of the freakin shotgun.

How about the 40 yard bomb on 3rd and 1?

"If we can’t pass, it’s going to be hard to run the ball whether you’ve got a good back or not. Hopefully we’ll complete a lot of balls and sneak a handoff in there every now and then.” ......... Classic Jones.

Don't anyone think for a minute that Jones will adjust his offense to take advantage of the running ability of Davis, Pope, or Gresham. Burcham would have to be absolutely horrendous for Jones to even consider doing something even remotely different.

well said - so obvious

“He’s the best blocker that I’ve had,” Jones said. - such a Juneism...

from an AP article: "SMU had 50 drives inside the 20 last season, and scored touchdowns on only 27 of them. Add in 12 field goals and the Mustangs ranked 97th out of 123 FBS teams last year in red-zone scoring at 78 percent. They lost three games by four points or less."

Prescott Line averaged 3.7 last season, but Zach Line averaged about the same his first year, so he could progress, although Prescott Line looked slow last season.

The "running back by committee" comment in the Gosselin article is promising. I would like to see a strong rotation, and some more run focused plays instead of classic June. The run has to be there not just to balance the passing game, which will most likely struggle early on, but also to get out of the awful red-zone statistics we had last season.

Gresham could be a break out player for the season. I also don't see why Nlemchi seems to get such limited play time.

Prescott is probably a nice guy - but would not be playing RB for any plays at all in the top 100 programs in the country but for SMU.

They said the same about Zach, the joy of sport eludes them.

He fits the system. SMU's scheme mainly asks a RB to be able to run zone (one cut runner, think Denver Broncos under Shanahan with Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson, Olandis Gary, or Texans with Kubiak) or run power with the ability to block. Not much of a premium on outside carries as it runs into the teeth of the coverage. Hawaii had tons of bigger, chunky RB's like Nate Ilaoa and West Kelikipili who aren't going to win any 100 meters races but can move ok and are a load to bring down. Tough, smart, inside runners are system fits here. Ideal guy for this offense is a Ricky Williams type (played FB his first 2 yrs at UT and is tough as heck to bring down) and NOT Reggie Bush (crazy good speed but not the toughest once contact is made).

As long as June has a solid OLine and a good QB this offensive scheme should do well. The issue is that those two spots are tough to get right. SMU 2011's OL and skill guys would have been really tough to beat with 2013's Garrett Gilbert at QB.
