This was an interesting list to read. It seems like at least half of the coaches that even made it to the D1 level started as walk-ons...love the game kinda stuff. Seems JJ had more playing time than anyone in the League besides the Head Ball Coach.

Even as a player June's success came riding the coattails of Mouse

6. June Jones, SMU -- Jones was a double-transfer before it was fashionable, spending time at Oregon (1971–1972), Hawaii (1973–1974), and Portland State (1975–1976). It was at PSU that he made his name as a run-and-shoot QB under Mouse Davis, and would make money in the NFL as a backup with the Falcons (1977-81) and CFL Toronto Argonauts. Jones was 1-4 as an NFL starting QB, the lone win coming in the Falcons' 1978 season-opener against the Oilers.

Here is what I got out of it:
"some of the best players have a long way to go before their coaching success matches their exploits between the lines of the gridiron."

List is bogus but I like reading it.

At Portland State JJ threw passes to Clint ? Didier who was later a starting TE for the Redskins for many years and a WR named Stief who subsequently played with the Cardinals for a number of years. JJ was truly exciting as a player running Mouse's offense. I had occasion to watch one of the best games I have ever seen in Portland, Oregon with PSU taking on Boise State wherein both teams combined for 5 TDs in the last 3 minutes. Amazing finish with JJ throwing the winning pass as time ended for a 52/50 winner.

So what? Most current FBS coaches didn't even make the NFL. The only one that had significant NFL stats (Spurrier) was an average player at best.

You may not like JJ for what he has done at SMU, but going back 40 years to denigrate his playing ability is weak and petty.

Not denigrating his performance. Amazing to even make it. Doesn't change the fact that June's noteworthy success has always come with Mouse Davis. Even at Hawaii, June's record was not that great until Mouse Davis shows up for two years and suddenly Colt Brennan explodes.

I enjoy your Avatar (probably my favorite one on PF) much more than your opinions, which I agree with CA Mustang are petty on many occasions.
