SMU vs. Big XII on Labor Day Weekend

Postby GoMustAAngs2007 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 10:54 am

2007 - SMU was coming off of a 6-6 season with Justin Willis at QB entering his second year as a starter. There were some expectations going into the opener that SMU could upset an unproven Texas Tech team at home.

The Result: Texas Tech 49, SMU 9
Graham Harrell to Michael Crabtree and "All Out"

2010 - SMU was coming off of an 8-5 season and a Hawaii Bowl win over Nevada. Kyle Padron was entering his second year as a starter after an MVP performance in the bowl game. There were expectations that SMU could upset an unproven Texas Tech team in Lubbock led by a new coach, Tommy Tuberville.

The Result: Texas Tech 35, SMU 27
That game wasn't as close as the score indicated

2011 - SMU was coming off of a solid if unspectacular season in which they reached the CUSA championship game before losing the Armed Forces Bowl to Army. Some expected the Mustangs to be competitive with 8th ranked Texas A&M in College Station.

The Result: A&M 46, SMU 14
Kyle Padron exits stage right after 2 INTs

2012 - SMU welcomes Garrett Gilbert as the starting QB going into the opener against Baylor in Waco. With good talent on offense, some expect the Mustangs to stay competitive with the Bears.

The Result: Baylor 59, SMU 24
This game was over by the middle of the second quarter

2013 - Gilbert's second year as a starter, SMU coming off of another decisive Hawaii Bowl victory, some called for an upset of Texas Tech and rookie head coach/boy wonder Kliff Kingsbury at Ford Stadium.

The Result: Texas Tech 41, SMU 23
Texas Tech wins with a rookie head coach and 3rd string QB

I will be rooting for the Mustangs from the beach in St. Thomas this Labor Day weekend but I am at the point where I do not expect the results to be any different. Those of you predicting an upset will likely be the same ones on here on Monday expressing shock and outrage that we lost by 3+ TDs. See you all in Denton on Sept. 6th.

Agree on most counts, but you forgot that many predicting that we will be thoroughly dominated will also be on here expressing shock and outrage that we were thoroughly dominated.

I don't know about that, the ones that predict these upsets generally downplay it when we lose to make their predictions seem less foolish ("The game was closer than the score", "It's only preseason", "We'll win the rest of our games", etc.).

More just outrage that after so many years we can't hang with old SWC peers / teams with winning records.

Understand the outrage, but you know there will be some who act shocked too.

Winning this game is equivalent to winning the lottery. Not happening

Improbable events occurring in the order that they'd most likely would.

1. Hole in one on the golf course
2. Royal flush at the casino
3. Winning the lottery
4. Big12 choosing 1 handle
5. Smu beating Baylor

Briles took over Baylor the same year June took over SMU.....should be a pretty evenly matched game.

Yes, good summary. Same old story, different game. Hopefully we can keep it respectable.

I was dealt a royal straight flush once. Try keeping a poker face when that happens.

I listened with my SMU grad 50 Dad when a similar ranked SMU team beat #2 Navy with Roger
Staubach in 63 :!:

Was there as a student when a similar ranked SMU team beat #4 A$M in the Cotton Bowl in 74 :!:

Listened to the radio when a lower ranked SMU team tied top 10 A$M in the Alamodome in 94.

Been 20 years since then. We're due :!:
May the forth be with us.

I could've gone without remembering any of those games, outside of the 2010 almost miracle comeback.

I can't believe you didn't use an exclamation point (or multiple ones) on the royal flush.

Labor Day weekends have been disappointing for SMU football fans. I keep hoping this year will be different
