24 years and no real improvementBought first season tickets in 1990, supported with money, time, attendance since then home and away games both football and basketball. One of first real dates was wife was cotton bowl victory over Arkansas when they fumbled inside our 5 and we held on. Hit me this morning when she said they were better before we got married, and certainly haven't improved over all these years.
There has been enough time to at least get competitive and look like we are striving for better. I've posted before, just look like you have a plan, working it, and giving max effort. At least Rossleys teams for most part looked like they were trying to execute game plan even when outnumbered. I was at the tie in the Alamodome to highly ranked A&M and even A&M people complimentary how we played back then. We will not be the big boys because of how landscape changed and we missed that boat I think as others have pointed out. However we should be year in and year out that team people hate to play because they know we will give them max effort, be well coached, and work a plan. See North Dakota state. The bigger issue for school from business side remains that people like me and others in my generation who have supported this for 20 years are now getting ready to stop funding it. Simply there is no return on our investment, and hard to continue to support something with no upward trend or improvement, and there may not be others behind us to continue the level of support. As us older loyal guys finally throw our hands up and say enough, if nothing behind us willing to do the same program in even bigger trouble. It won't sustain itself unfortunately.
Re: 24 years and no real improvementThat is correct - and our big money guys are all 75+, and winding down, and have been in a trance with June's hypnosis - and apparently not understanding the recruiting issues.
It is an issue that has to be addressed immediately. We don't have 5 yrs.
Re: 24 years and no real improvementFace it- it is an issue that should have been addressed last year.
Hey fans- can you say 'Div II' - see I knew you could.
Re: 24 years and no real improvementYou (not necessarily you specifically) Olds have made your bed, now lay in it. All the years of kissing up to the admin, having mustang club kum-by-yah with VarsityShop, slapping Copeland and Turner on the back, sitting by while misguided money men squander it away so afraid of the death penalty that they won't even try to compete.
Thankfully we finally had a booster with a clue get fed up and take over basketball. Can that happen with football? I'm not betting on it. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: 24 years and no real improvementWhat does 6 years get you:
at BU- a real coach in Art Briles, a conf. championship and lots of upward mobility at UTSA- a new program, a coach who wants to build a team and has a plan, and reasonable success at SMU- a slight turnaround, an over-paid coach who cares less, and a regression to our old results.
Re: 24 years and no real improvement
Remind me, what happened to your loudly advertised boycott of the football board until June was gone? I cannot remember.
Re: 24 years and no real improvementgrant- sorry to see that your dementia has returned.
Re: 24 years and no real improvementI am no longer a fan of the Dallas Cowboys due to their lack of a coherent plan and even basic leadership....grew up watching every game, but after Parcells left it became apparent things were just never going to change. I simply lost interest....seems many others are seeing that now as well.
With SMU I obviously have a more direct attachment, but things are wearing very thin. I am not a big money guy by any means, but I have owned season tickets since I graduated, follow the team as closely as I can, and try to talk the team up with friends, etc. Honestly.....despite my love for the team it's all starting to wear thin. I can handle losing and having disappointing seasons occasionally or even often, but the lack of any kind of plan or real, supportable success beyond an occasional flash in the pan (ie, TCU 05 & 11) makes me question if this is worth the effort. I'm sure you older guys are feeling the same. I just don't get it...why, after nearly 25 years, does it still seem to be so far away....i can't figure out how schools like UTSA are able to build from scratch to at least competence in less than 5 years and we can't seem to manage better than 6 wins in a weak conference after so many? I think most SMU grads pride themselves on having a degree from a school that produces leaders in business and other fields..why can't we find some REAL leadership for to match that for our football program? I don't know where it goes from here, but I think we are at a major turning point with a lot of our fans, and if we screw it up again after this disaster of a season it may not even be worth fielding a team a few years from now. This sucks.
Re: 24 years and no real improvement
This is my situation exactly along with most of my close alum friends. Season tics since graduating '02 and always travel to see them (Washington st. Annapolis, aggie every year). It was embarrassing there last night - Baylor fans throwing pity at us. I just wanted competitive. N. Texas got whooped this week but they saw that garbage last night.
Re: 24 years and no real improvement
Good comparison also maybe Rice. Small private school, big city with other teams to compete with, not too much student support, etc. However I think they have multiple 10 win seasons and bowl victories recently, and even before had 10 wins when chase clement their QB and Dillard their WR. I know you can argue they play easier schedule but head to head they have done pretty well against us, and they also play big boys non conference. Really no reason for Rice to have had same or better success than us and we haven't surpassed them in last 20 plus years.
Re: 24 years and no real improvement
Apologies for not remembering everything ever written on the board.
Re: 24 years and no real improvementtotal recall can sometimes be a real asset
Re: 24 years and no real improvementThe worst for me is my disgust over football is tainting my enthusiasm for bball.

Re: 24 years and no real improvement
Really because my disgust over football is heightening my enthusiasm for basketball. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security
