why were the announcers as well as the local media calling this a rivalry?

Because we have fallen that far. And agreeing to a 10 year home/home is pretty much SMU trying to promote it as a rivslry

It was like they didn't even look at the stands. Anyone that has actually been in attendance at a real rivalry game (JC Watts should have known better since he played in Texas-OU games) would laugh at the notion that today's game is a rivalry.

Announcers kept talking about the building fan base for NTSU, they did not have that great of a crowd there today.

it can't be a rivalry unless both teams are competitive with one another. we don't have any rivals these days
