Dream staff for 2015

Postby East Coast Mustang » Sun Sep 07, 2014 10:56 am

HC: Philip Montgomery, current Baylor OC. He has Texas ties and has been with Briles forever- he's coached Case Keenum, Kevin Kolb, RGIII, Nice Florence, and now Bryce Petty. So you could say he knows a thing or two about offense. He would instantly bring in an exciting offensive scheme and the credentials to convince offensive guys to come play for him.

OC: Adrian Klemm. Bring him back with a raise and a promotion to OC and recruiting coordinator. Also have a de facto HCIW arrangement in place where if/when Montgomery leaves for another job if he's successful, Klemm takes over as HC. Would that be enough to pry him out of UCLA?

DC: Willie Martinez, current Tennessee DBs coach, former UGA DC. Yeah, he flamed out at UGA but he's one of the best recruiters out there and has coached some pretty solid defenses throughout his career. Not sure if the promotion to DC and a raise could get him out of Knoxville, though.

Biggest thing here is RECRUITING. I'm not sure about Montgomery's recruiting capabilities, but as a HC he wouldn't be recruiting as much as his assistants. I know Montgomery can coach -- his track record with QBs speaks to that. Surround him with some stud recruiting assistants and we could have this thing rolling in a few years

I just don't see Montgomery coming to SMU. Something tells me he will wait for a P5 opening.

I don't think Klemm is a good coach - he can recruit - but his O Line at UCLA is not good.

We need a established HC that is seen as damaged goods - like LB was - that can attract a quality staff because the staff will know he can get them placed in the profession if things go south.

We've got to go with someone who has experience (like LB), who will come in with enthusiasm, and embrace our traditions (including wearing red and blue). No more tiki crap ever.

Right. Because a red or blue shirt would have kept the bowl streak alive last year?
The program has a lot of things to be fixed, but that's irrelevant.

No, I'm from Alabama, and it all works together to create success and championships - ask Nick Saban. It's a machine. Little things do matter.

Klemm's hallmark is recruiting which he can't do as well with a HCIW designation. If that's what it takes, we should pass

I get it, and to a degree, I agree. All I'm saying is the reason we got clubbed wasn't a shirt. There are bigger issues.

TidePony i absolutely right! Adopting a schools traditions and history is a small, but extremely important aspect of coaching that we never have gotten from JJ.

Damaged goods coach with a BCS win? Mark Mangino fits that.

my dream staff starts with Chad Morris who is offensive minded and has actually been a head coach and is a guy with Texas ties, but I don't think we can afford him and I don't think he'd want to take on the challenge that is ahead for SMU. I think ours is a job for a relative unknown...young guy with fire...and Texas ties because he will have to put together a quality staff that is willing to work their tails off to have success here

I like Tom Herman OC Ohio State for next HC Was with Baliff at rice (knows life at a private school) has spent several years recruiting the state of Texas and has coached under Paul Rhodes and urban Meyer two very good head coaches.

Next head coach should be Jake Spavital.

I acknowledge it's about as likely as we thought SMU would hire June Jones 7 years ago, but this thread is about our "dream staff" and mine would have Chad as the HC with a staff of assistants with Texas ties

I think we need to bring in someone from the midwest, think ahead. Break out of the stranglehold. make no small plans. Be bold.
We are the future.
Could use some OH, IL, PA commits
