Some advice to Coach Mason

First and foremost, Mason has always been a pleasure to talk to. If I bugged him with a couple of questions after practice, or at signing day, he always took time out for a conversation. Really nice guy.

Some thoughts on what to do:):

1) If the rumors of players not liking certain coaches or coaches not pulling their weight are true, go to Hart and demand to clean house of those coaches now. Request that you bring in Rossley as the OC. Rossley has enough contacts to pull in some guys who would work for the rest of the season at whatever positions you need to fill. Make it happen so that we don't lose too many players to transfer after the season and try to bring the team together to make the most out of this one. And nothing would bring the alumni alienated by Jones back faster than bringing Rossley in at some capacity.

2) We all know that you want to hit at practice. Change the rules so that you can hit at practice. Make this your team, and put your face on it as soon as possible.

3) Open practice. Invite fans to watch. Invite high school coaches to watch. Open SMU to the community. Hell, we haven't had a red-blue game in years, set one up for the bye week before Cincy. And show off how you take control of practice, how you teach while you are out there. It is going to advertise you more than anything else. Get as much out of this as you can before the end of the season. This is your team now, do what you want with it.

You are being placed in a difficult situation. Take control of it, own it, and make the best of it. The number of people who support you will grow with every change that you make, so change whatever you feel is necessary. You are a good guy, and the more people get to know you, the better of you will be, and the better of SMU will be.

We do not want to open practice, in fact we want to close them to everyone. We don't want to show our game plan to any spies from the schools playing us.

Mason needs to coach the team as best as he can and tell his agent to be looking for another job for him at another school. Not any players left when Bennett was fired but any want to leave then let them go. It will open up more scholarships for the new coach. It will probably take 4 recruiting classes to get this mess straighten out anyway.

You would probably think so unless Mason runs the defense from the field.

I would guess Mason will still be DC, and will let Phillips/Morrison handle the offense.

It just says bush league that we think of ourselves this way. I understand we suck THIS YEAR which is proven by the Denton and Waco debacles but at least we can have some self respect and start acting like we belong in division I FBS football.

Close practice one day a week to work on gameday specific stuff, but otherwise leave it open and re-build those relationships.
